By 1940, the population of France was still around 40 million, while Germany increased to nearly 70 million (not including Austria, population 6.7 million, annexed in 1938.) Basically, Germany was twice as large as France in WWII. Not to mention, Germany was more industrialized compared to agrarian France.

Well...was he though? It’s kind of hard to nail down the nationalities of people who lived before the modern nation existed. But if we go that route, we can also credit French and Normans with the First Crusade.
But anyway, France has won many battles and some wars. France won the Hundred Years War and can be considered a victor of the 30 Years War, and was on the winning side of WWI. Bouvines was a big win. Etc etc

THey along with Spain and Great Britain were a super power for hundreds of years.
A nation doesn't control large parts of North America, have colonies in the Caribbean and Africa, by losing wars.
