Writers Guild of America strike (2023)

So, the TV writers are striking again. Apparently, one of their big issues is to prevent Hollywood from using chatbots to write scripts.
If a computer without a sense of humor can write funnier material than they can, maybe they should not be doing comedy.

Hasn't this been going on for a couple of weeks now?

My lack of notice of the fallout shows the success of their efforts.

"If a union goes on strike and nobody notices, did it really go on strike at all?" Apologies to George Berkeley.

Given the quality of the majority of movies released in the last 3-5 years, they have a LOT to be worried about.

Does their striking prevent Hollywood from using chatbots in the meantime?

They are still on strike? Haven’t heard a word.
South Park did it first.

Interesting corollary would be whether the performers would cross the pickets to perform material written by bots during a writer strike.

“Up yours, buddy!”
“Don’t call me buddy, pal!”
“Don’t call me pal, friend!”

I don't see how they can stop a studio from using the resources available to them.
Scriptwriters will never be totally obsolete as some will be needed to make tweaks to the AI output but having a room full of writers for a show or movie is a thing of the past.
AI could very well bust the WGA up as I bet some will eventually drop out of the union and take what few writing jobs will be left.

AI is going to replace actors too very soon.
AI is also going to make a lot of large studios sweat as now it will be cheaper and easier for the masses to produce content.
It is also going to be a major fight as it will be easy to rip off IPs and share the content via torrents
It's already happening with music where AI is writing and producing rap music in Drake's voice.

Theoretically.
In practice, the studios likely take the same approach as car manufacturers and solidify themselves in using older inefficient labor for political reasons, which in turn leaves them unable to compete long term.

No one cares about Hollywood movies anymore

the comedy literally writes itself

It's pretty hard for an individual to build a car
It won't be as hard for an individual to use AI to make a show or video. Studios are going to have a lot of competition.
Youtube has already done a lot to disrupt TV. Now imagine if people like Mr Beast can make more content for cheaper and faster.
Studios are going to have to adapt, unlike car manufacturers.

More likely, the studios start trying to find a way to close off outlets like YouTube which make it easier to challenge them.
The leviathan doesn’t like change and will fight it tooth and nail rather than adapt.

The funny part of this strike is that supposed late night comedians like Cobert can’t do their show. How embarrassing is it that Cobert can’t write his own material.
