Time quiz

I barely qualify with 31 points. The minimum is 30 points.

This thing in time is stupid beyond words. Every half-decent Nation on the planet has a merit-based immigration system that a good chunk of their own citizens wouldn't pass. And that's exactly how it should be.

You know because we are citizens and the people that want to come here aren't

30 points is the minimum to apply. That does not mean you will get it though. The total # of employment based green cards will be capped at 140,000. That cap includes primary applicants as well as any immediate family members like spouses and minor children. So in reality around 60 to 70 thousand professionals will receive green card in this employment-based quota. People with points in low 30s will probably never get it.

The raise act is quite specific on the point system. I like the point system, but the time quiz is a very valid one.

Basically you can't get in unless you have a stem degree or lots of $$.

Contrast that to australia, canada, new zealand, who offer points for a variety of factors.

Granted, I am sure additional point systems will be added to the bill. Right now, it is a crap, world class academics couldn't get in unless they were also rich.

The point is, The time implied premise is stupid. I mean, clearly they're playing the "this is awful, even a lot of Americans wouldn't pass"

To which my response is, a bunch of Canadians couldn't pass the Canadian tests. Same for NZ, Australia and basically every other decent place on the planet

They wouldn't as the point system is too stringent and not comprehensive, which I believe is the point of the article.

The ONLY measure of if it's crap is simple.

If the point system results in more people passing than you wish to or even can accept, point system good.

If it results in fewer people passing than you'd like to accept, point system bad.

Kinda like salaries.

Of course I qualify. I won the lottery by being born in the US as a natural citizen.

Not at all. If the point system were to exclude a large number of people who would contribute and add to society, but are excluded due to the point system then the system is shite.

frick, if you graduated from LSE with an MBA, you could not get in. Do you think that person is not going to contribute?

The idea of a point system is GOOD, what the RAISE outlines is BAD.

There are 7 billion people on the planet.

We could create a system that allowed 10 million a year to enter and still exclude a large number of people who would contribute and add to society

Your assertion is silly.

It should be harder to come here than it is to be born here to parents who are citizens. That's the point.

Define contribute.

Do we need more mbas? Is bringing him in instead of hiring a domestic mba going to add more 6 figure jobs?

I don't see the problem. We already have enough people that are uneducated & poor or have useless liberal arts degrees. We don't need any more. We need to start doing what is best for this country. Stop trying to bring in more people to live on welfare just because they'll vote Democrat.
