I'd like to add another element to the resource argument.

It isn't only about gender.

We shouldn't give women slots for the same reason we don't give fat men slots, people with flat feet etc.

The reality is, SOME of those people could end up meeting the standards. But the military realized that too high a number will not.

People point to bad arse women and say "she could do it". But this ain't college football. Our recruiters aren't out the beating the bushes looking for five star female athletes

And I say to that, "But she couldn't do it, day in, day out, week in, week out - hell, many men can't."

Got into a big fight with a fellow seminar mate about DADT while in the AWC (it was being debated while we were there). He was a huge liberal (and a poster boy Marine - an awesome officer actually). He used that argument until I asked him if someone who was physically unable (disabled, overweight, etc) to be Marine had the "right" to be one.

Changed his tune with quickness.

Let's not forget that men and women like to frick each other.

It's like people go to their civilian jobs everyday and don't see that half the people in the office are fricking each other and the other half spend half their time gossiping about it. It's one thing when it makes a private company less efficient and the worst thing that could happen is you lose some business. It's quite another when the taxpayers have to pay for that ineffiency and the consequences are death, or even worse, losing.

Let me dig one of those up. I know we both wrote more than a few on that.

I forgot how fricking legendary that Submarine thread was.

On one of my earlier deployments, our battalion commander got caught tapping a Corporal. She wasn't even hot, she was just there. This was in an intel unit surrounded by other POGs. Not sure why anyone would think it would be better in infantry units or smaller teams.

One unit's BN SGM was smashing an E4. It got out, his wife (also in the Army) found out. He shot himself in the head in his CHU.

all of this could have been avoided.

Our (married) BC was tapping a (married) WO1 - both intel with TS/SCI. She wasn't bad looking, but she had a weird shaped head. Nobody did anything about it. They were fruity Californians, anyway. They were, generally, a buffer between us and the Keystone Cops at Bondsteel.

Good times... Good times in Kosovo.
