That's not limited to officers and retirement, either. I turned down Gunny when I separated. I'd have made under $70k all said and done. The first job I took as a civilian paid $250k and I didn't try that hard to find it. Nearly every job in the military pays better in the civilian world. There are some good ones who stick around because they can't exactly do our kind of work as civilians, but once you get to Staff Sergeant, you're starting to move out of the teams anyway and any incentive to stay in goes away quickly.

And someone explain to me why we have 9 fricking enlisted ranks. The first 3 in the Marine Corps and the first 4 or 5 in the rest of the services literally are just different names for Private.

20 acts like a great filter for enlisted also.
I just view it as more egregious on the other side simply because their combined income potential/retirement is so much higher.
But yes. I tell every enlisted friend of mine who reaches out to me now that I'm retired......."I cannot think of a single compelling argument for staying in past 20 if you think you have even a little bit of talent".
I could have stayed in another 6 years gaining a whole 2.5% per year in retirement. Pfft. My first pay raise in my first job swallowed that and then some.

I'm commander Shepard, and this is my favorite post on the citadel.
I was a logistics officer in the army. My battalion cmdr burned an above center of mass on me and still couldnt convince me to stay in past 4 years.
I had 3 female cmdrs in 4 years in a BSB. That was enough.

Officer to CSM - "We're going to need about 20 privates for this detail" = "20 people E4 and below"

I should add that I stayed till 20 and looking back, even that was dumb. Shoulda got out at about 10.

This career discussion has knocked the WICA conversation clear off the tracks.
Still good insight, tho.
PS I still maintain that my long post is more correct than wrong. There are reasons why the career-oriented officer must conform to the current WICA paradigm and I explained some of them in my post.

Oh. I agree.
The bottom line is that while the military claims to develop "leaders" in its officer corps, nothing could be further from the truth.
You won't find another group of people at that income level in ANY organization in the U.S. with a more box checking, go along to get along, fear of their own shadows than military officers.

Yeah, this is what I recommend to anyone who asks. You get some great experience, with enough time left to have a great career when you're done.

Please tell me this was a Beltway Badit Jarhead and not an honest to goodness Fleet Warrior![]()

Was he an 0302 or some box kicking MOS? Sad thing is if that guy is an 0-6 range in the Marine Corps then he is my peer group. So glad I got out as a Sr. 0-3 (made the list as early promote for 0-4 and sad no thank you).

I graduated from AWC in 2010 and he was a Col then. I anticipate he has already retired by now. Or he may be a GO. For entertainment sake he was a field artillery officer who looked just like the guy who played Dick Winters in BoB. You may know who I am talking about now

He addressed that. There are some good officers, but he's not wrong about the majority. The higher up you go, the more accurate that is.

Damn Gun Bunny. They are about as bad a Box Kickers.
I likely wouldn’t know him based upon being an 0-6 in 2010. He would have been 4 to 6 years ahead of my peer group. So he would have been punching his ticket at a Recruit Depot or Recruiting while I was in the Fleet.

The more accurate statement is more time they spend in the Beltway.....it warps you like you won’t believe.

Well as long as he said it was the majority

It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under.

I’m a patriette, and I totally agree with you and the others who stand with you. Y’all made some EXCELLENT points. I have always believed that it was selfish and silly for women to mess up the military balance so to speak. It was a smooth machine, and throwing women and trannies in the mix really complicates things on multiple levels. Logic and common sense tells us: Let’s Just let men protect our country and thank them for doing so. Period. It’s not sexist or trannyphobic, it’s science. Well, i guess a tranny with a penis would be ok as far as physical abilities go, but it still messes up the all guys comraderie type environment.
Anyway, I had never thought about the cost of training wasted along with the slots and how you end up with many less soldiers by the end of the year because women who didn’t make it took training spots of men who would have.
