Why you should have healthcare even if young and healthy

Last July I had a freak accident. I was camping, changing my clothes, lost my balance, twisted the ankle in the wrong way, and wound up breaking my tibia and shattering my fibula. This wasn't my first time in the woods. I have over 500 miles overnight hiking experience. But on that day fate was against me.
It required 3 operations. I caught a hospital infection and required way more antibiotics than I want to even think of, and I needed extended wound care at one of the incision site. Nearly 4 months on crutches, and now a month of PT and counting.
The total pre discount bill, at last count, was over $120,000. I paid only about 2.5k because I had insurance.
The recovery was very difficult as is. I missed 6 weeks of work and my wife had to delay looking for work to take care of me (was lucky it happened while she was between jobs). I don't even want to think of how much harder it would have been if we had to file bankruptcy on top of it, and it would no doubt be DIY PT.
So if you are young and healthy and think you don't need insurance, think again.

When my mom finally got out of my grandparents' house and started living on her own, my grandmother made her buy health insurance and stressed the importance of it. And this is back in 1982 when my mom had just turned 21.
All young people should invest in healthcare no matter how invincible you think you are. Because it only takes on accident to bankrupt you and set you back by a decade if you don't have it.

Obamacare is dead. We have Trumpcare now. Good luck.

Are you an obamacare bot?
It's not a coincidence you are starting this OP in the middle of open enrollment.

I agree everyone really should but Obamacare has made it completely unaffordable for young healthy people

Is that what you guys call anyone giving common sense advice? An "Obamacare bot?" That's interesting. Especially considering the removal of the individual mandate means there is no Obamacare. Trump owns this monster now.

No, you don't get to push Obamacare off on Trump. Health insurance is high because of idiots like you that supported Obama.

Young and healthy you say?
Were you not on your parents insurance?

That's a great story and all but that can be handled by allowing young people to buy catastrophic health insurance.
So why can't they do that?

You need to go the exchange and check the rates. Somebody who is 30 years old can get a silver plan for $400-$450 month. That is not insurance that is robbery. If I was a 30 year old I would not pay it either.

You should have a catastrophic policy and pay cash for the small stuff.
Why should everybody be forced to buy the health equivalent of the idiotic plans where you pay for car repairs up front?

A very good explanation of why everyone should have an emergency fund of 6 months living expenses.
Start campaigning for the govt to force everyone to have it.

Maybe you should force your propaganda on your neice and nephew instead of spewing it here.

The only real question here is, whose alter is this?
Oh, and what people "should" do because it's a good choice and what the government should MANDATE people do are completely unrelated topics.

How many strength building and/or ballet classes can $500/month get you? Sounds like some prevention would have been much cheaper.

OR... Hear me out bud... How about young folks have the ability to purchase high deductible plans that are meant for these situations instead of forcing them to purchase over the top comprehensive plans with high deductibles and high monthly premiums.
Food for thought.

lol, no. It's all about priorities. Stop eating out so much and cancel your cable bill. Don't blame other people for not wanting to pay for your responsibility.

You are wrong. Obama care killed affordable plans for young men.
