Congressmen go overseas on this stuff all the time. Hell at the end of the day Congress has the true say on going to war. Allocation of funds for foreign aid. Other stuff. So I’m not sure you’re right.

True. Look no further than the Logan Act.

Why be a member of Congress if you can't fly all over the world and stay in five star hotels on the taxpayers dime?

Nancy -

"Thank you for hosting me here in (fill-in-the-blank). President Trump will soon be impeached and removed from office in disgrace, and before he can take the oath of office, Vice-President Pence will have an unfortunate heart attack and sadly, a stroke, rendering him incapable of performing his duties. As I'm third in line to the presidency, you can kiss my ring now, or wait until I'm formally on the throne in the White House." It's your choice.

Congress does this all of the time. Various delegations/cmte's/sub-cmte's travel to meet/conduct oversight, etc.

The President isn't the only authority on foreign relations, both chambers have Cmte's who oversee the Executive agencies charged with foreign affairs. Congress is also the one who has to approve funding for everything, so its not that crazy that they go and see whats happening on the ground or meet with various groups from other countries.

Not saying that they don't also use it as leisure travel, but who wouldn't enjoy travelling around the world? The President and his entourage aren't exactly miserable to get to travel everywhere either.

I'm definitely not defending the Speaker wanting to go during the shutdown, but Codels in general are not ridiculous.

Just because they have abandoned their Constitutional duties in the interests of the MIC and perpetual reelection doesn't mean that we should encourage them to continue doing so. Every single one of the outstanding AUMF's needs to be rescinded by Congress, and the authority over military action needs to be reigned back in.

Diplomats should be handling this and lawmakers should be briefed

Which is why we end up with the fricked up geo-economic-political deals that we end up with. They don't know what the frick they're doing.

The OP wasn't point out if they DID actually go, he was asking if they SHOULD.

And the answer is a resounding frick NO.

We have diplomats in all of those places, and that is largely who codels travel to meet with, as opposed to forcing our diplomats to come home to Washington to ask them questions.

Codels don't generally conduct meetings at the head of state or cabinet level without senior executive officials also present.

It would be way more costly to have the entire foreign service wing of the State Department flying home every couple of years for various subcommittee hearings.

Congress oversees the funding for all of this stuff. I do not see how it is outrageous for them to occasionally go over there and take measure of the situation. Their oversight is independent of the Executive branch, on purpose.

True, it's too bad they don't have secure teleconference capability.

Does she use friends, family and grandchildren as advisors?

She has a habit of dragging a lot of non-essential people along on these trips.

That is largely who CODELS say they are traveling to meet with...

Three reasons for a CODEL:

1. Opposition party trying to muddy the waters or get their name out there.

2. Boondoggle

3. Both 1 and 2

Neither side should travel, unless requested to do so by POTUS or the State Department.

You don't think this is what happens the overwhelming majority of the time? Lengthy codel trips are not all that common. Nor are they some inherent evil like some people here seem to think they are.

Try being on the other end of one of those CODEL trips.
