In my area it's the opposite. Burger King's dinning room opened back up months ago. Over a year now I believe.

I think it may be a business strategy. They don't want inside seating for the stated reasons above.
The new McDonalds by me cut their dining area in half and doubled their drive thru windows.

I bought breakfast inside a Mcdonald's last Sunday. Used the kiosk and actually received the correct order.

I made two mistakes late yesterday. I went to McDonalds and went inside. They lost my order and ended up telling an employee my order twice. I don't think the current work force is capable of doing both drive-thru and dine in anymore.

I saw an elderly couple with Florida plates, no doubt traveling, just wanted to sit down and eat. I find it sad, and quite frankly am slightly angered, that these old people had to get back in their car and drive around a town they don’t know just to find another place to sit down and eat.
Same experience last summer driving to Arkansas and back for a funeral, traveling with a young kid, trying to find a place to get something to eat and use the bathroom. The worst part is there was nothing on any of the signs to say the dining room was closed. So us, and we saw many other families, pull in, park, unbuckled the kids, walk to the door, find it locked, buckle back up, kids whining and everyone having to pee, and drive around to the next place. If the dining room is going to be closed, then fine, but put a sign up so people don't keep pulling in.

When on vacation my wife (no pics) used to fly but all you could see was the tops of clouds. Now we drive everywhere ,but the key is to avoid those damned interstates. You can see a lot more of the real US if you stick to the old US and state highways.
Why all this drivel? Because we like to stop at the Mom &Pop local restaurants avoid the chains and franchises . Some of the best biscuits I have ever eaten were in a small local restaurant in Fredericksburg Texas, miles away from the interstate.
Another plus is the inside dining is always (in Texas) open with restrooms.

their business model has changed.
Their model used to explicitly be to build at interstate exits and be designed such that you could go in and out of their bathrooms easy (look at their old designs where they have doors right at the bathrooms in addition to one right by the dining area/checkout counter). They kept the bathrooms clean and wanted you to basically know that they didn’t care if that’s all you were doing. The thought was, while some might just duck in and out to do that, the vast majority of folks would buy something - also making sure to keep the dining areas clean and inviting. .
My parents have also bitched about traveling and having nowhere to go potty anymore.

Hey Marco Polo, explain to me how to get from Atlanta to Forrest City AR without interstates. I'll hang up and listen.

A combination of being unable to find staff / profit.
This is the correct answer. The staff shortage is real. I don't understand it as the free money is all dried up, but no one is working the < $15 an hour jobs.

A buddy of mine owns about a dozen of them and regardless of the area (inner city, suburbs, out in the country - he has them in a few different counties) THEY CANNOT FIND ENOUGH PEOPLE TO WORK THERE TO OPEN THE INSIDE.

We took 278 from Tupelo to Helena to AR1 because one of the Memphis bridges was closed. It was a nice drive. But 278 from ATL through Alabama is how many stoplights and additional hours?

My guess is they accidentally discovered a business model that saves them employees and have more profit because people are willing to wait in their cars to eat crap (except for the sausage, cheese McMuffin). More profit, can't find employees, selling just as much (or at least has a good profit margin), what's not to like?

Probably dont have enough people to clean it
Very likely.
My wife (no pics) went to the On The Border in Southaven, MS last night. The person seating her warned her that service was slow because they had only two servers for the entire place. Due to this, they had to limit seating and even then they were falling behind.

It's been my observation that black managers are generally the ones keeping the dining room closed. It's a local choice.

It’s not about COVID. They have found a way to make a higher profit. The don’t have to hire as many employees, clean as much, and they get the food out faster. Order online and walk in and get your food. For the people that go through the drive thru it is not faster.
If you want to sit go to Wendy’s, BK, Taco Bell, Arby’s. All are better than McDonald’s. I don’t eat there, but we have taken the kids and their friends.

I haven't eaten fast food since before covid, it's all fattening and I don't trust anyone making my food in these fast food places. Micky Ds is the worst.
