Besides the terrain, why haven't we sealed the deal? I shuttter to think the Taliban have the upper hand in any way - other than being the home team.

Terrain is a big part. For centuries.

Because like 80% of the people there don't know or don't care what "Afghanistan" is and don't want to be a part of it.

IEDs, caves, suicide bombers, the people there don't even get along with each other, etc...

Try a history book, if the Soviet Union at the height of their military power with zero rules couldn't crush these goat herders how can we?

Cause we're trying to fight a war without damaging our poppy fields

It's a shite culture with no desire to change form that.
Ultimately it's a culture problem, not a military problem.

Where I was.... The Pakistani border was within 25 miles. The enemy would drive across to fight during the day and drive home at night. we weren't allowed to kill anyone not actively engaging us or actively planting an IED even if we knew they were enemy.
THAT WILL CHANGE.
THAT WILL CHANGE.

Because these people live in the Stone Age and do not want to be enlightened or freed.

They're the organic expression of Pashtun nationalism.
Or tribalism, that's a better word.
They're Afghanistan.

Because the people who live there all follow a backwards, hateful religion straight out of 600 AD.
And that twisted belief system is the cornerstone of everything they do.

It's like the Wild West but with a bunch of insane Muslims that have not read a single thing their entire life beyond the Koran.

It's an easy place to blow up stuff and kill people because no one in the world cares

The war in the 80s destroyed the traditional tribal structure, the one force that really constrained their capacity for violence.
That was perhaps the worst legacy of the war. We enfranchised violent gangsters, just as we undermined the wise old men.

Thousands of years of taking other people's money and stashing their bodies in the rocky hills. Afghanistan cannot be pacified.

It's a war ravaged 3rd world hell hole controlled by warring clans.

They aren't concerned with being a united nation with a central government. They're loyal to their tribe and nothing else.

A lot of similarities with Nam.
Terrain, indigenous people, and a government who doesn't have it's heart into winning.

Yeah, you've got a large majority of the population that's just trying to survive but they're constantly being caught between the hammer and the anvil. They get held hostage by the Taliban then get shite from coalition forces for "aiding" the Taliban. As soon as we leave, they'll either be terrorized or exploited by the Taliban or some local drug lord. It's a shitty existence where they lose either way.
