Unfortunately, two of those blocking positions are in the yards of our allies (Poland and Romania). I give precisely zero fricks about that corrupt shithole Ukraine. I just don't want us in a shooting war with Russia over NATO allies.

Of all the stupid takes about why we should support the war in Ukraine, this is the dumbest.

I think the Russia-China alliance came before the Russian incursion into Ukraine. Has it evolved based on the circumstances of the time, sure. But I think the general structure was Russia goes after certain benefits to be had from Ukraine that it’s been eyeing for a while, and China agrees to back it and support it in certain ways both immediately as well as if certain needs arise. What does China get in return? Of course an ally, obviously, but also a blueprint as to what to expect if they invade Taiwan and the best schematics to be gleaned, as well as wearing down NATO and the U.S. as much as possible to perhaps set up an ideal opening in which to strike Taiwan. Its ally Russia having also caused us to burn money and supplies.

China has an unquenchable thirst for well priced, consistently supplied energy and Russia has an almost limitless supply.

This conflict and our actions leading to it and during it accelerated and may have permanently altered geopolitical realities. If you read papers, docs, statements coming from Russia, it’s pretty clear they are planning on this shift as a permanent reality rather than a temporary one.

Throughout the history of Russia, every invasion that they've ever had from their western flank has come through the Polish Gap and the Bessarabian Gap (Romania), which is why Russia continues to keep Moldova destabilized and stations troops in Transnistria. In WW2, Germany came through the polish plains while Romania came around the Carpathian Mountains through the Bessarabian Gap. These are the critical choke points that Russia needs to secure.

This is a war that WE created.

We wanted this. If that causes you hurt, then you're probably still a functional human being. Because this shite was not inevitable. It was chosen by us, for them.

We're the bad guys here.

frick Ukraine. The war is only depleting OUR military. We would be fricked right now if we had to actually go into a real war.

So kinda like beating your wife to prevent her from leaving you when you find out she enrolled in community college classes to get a degree and maybe leave you?

The only other potential rival is China. All we've given Ukraine is equipment, most of it older, to fight a land war (Javelins, tanks, Bradleys, etc.). If we go to war with China over Taiwan, that's going to be all Naval and Naval Aviation. We haven't depleted any of those supplies in Ukraine.

The pentagon recently ran a war game scenario to imagine a possible U.S.-China confrontation. The conclusion? America would run out of munitions, quickly. "This would occur in less than one week in a Taiwan Strait conflict." They concluded that "the U.S. industrial base is not prepared for a possible conflict with China."

To keep them from pushing further west. Romania, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and now Finland are NATO allies. If they push there, we have no choice but to push back due to our treaty with NATO. I would prefer for this to end in Ukraine.

That same war game scenario also showed us winning 20 out of 22 scenarios, with the only losses being with the U.S. being severely handicapped in the simulations.

That also has nothing to do with Ukraine. The land warfare munitions given to Ukraine would have no bearing on a naval battle with China.

What gives you that impression? Everything I understand is that they would prefer some distance from NATO.

The purpose for Russia is to push west to block the Polish Gap and Bessarabian Gap from which Russia has typically been invaded from the west. The goal is to push far enough west to block those strategic positions to give Moscow more breathing room. The Russians have never been particularly skilled at fighting wars. Their best weapons have always been distance, winter, and bodies to overcome their lack of tactical and strategic acumen. Think of WW2. Did Russia repel Operation Barbarossa due to military competence? No. They were constantly retreating, but slowly. Eventually distance, weather, and an inability to secure supply lines led to the Germans' downfall.
