Why doesn't the Smithsonian charge admission fees?

4,000 employees were affected by the shut down. That's a lot of payroll. Charging something affordable like $10 would bring in millions in revenue.

It has a 1.4 billion operating budget. It also gets 45,000 visitors a day. Multiple that by $10.

I agree.

Many people live a long way from the Smithsonian and don’t visit, but one or two times in their lifetime.

A nominal charge would be reasonable.

Does that mean foreign tourists have to pay?

If it were open 365 days a year that’s 164 million a year roughly

"We" also pay for stadiums through municipal bonds, tax concessions, etc

Should all sports events be free?

i’m more than willing to pony up 164 million annually to provide free access for all to some of our nation, the world, and history’s most priceless artifacts

The three times I’ve been I always throw a $20 in the donation box, specifically the American History Museum. I’d be happy to pay $10, or some fee that gets you access to all of the museums. The National Mall is one of my favorite places in the country to visit.

My favorite as well. Used to live in Richmond and went many times.

There is a massive warehouse where a lot of items are stored and shown at the various museums on a rotating basis.

One that stuck with me, they had one section on items left at the Vietnam memorial. A six pack of Schlitz, one can empty with a note..."Promised you I would have a beer with you when we both got back stateside...."

Maybe we can do the same thing with this wall you guys want so bad. I would personally enjoy Museum much more than a wall. Since you guys don't want to pay for museums and Educational Tools, why don't you pay for the wall then

I have been to several "national" museums and none charged an entry fee but all had donation boxes of some type.

Normally there are lots of groups with kids and 10 bucks may make it cost prohibitive for some which kinda defeats the purpose of a public museum.

In all honesty if only 160 million would be raised by charging 10 bucks it is not worth it, FedGiov would spend 2.4 billion collecting it.

If you can't afford $10 to take your kids out, you should really rethink your life. That's the cost of a movie for an entire day's entertainment.

Cause it’s where people get indoctrinated into the liberal agenda. I went there recently with my family of 7 and nearly walked out when I heard A FEDERAL EMPLOYEE talk about how proud they were to have President Obama and how they miss having an adult in the White House.
