I'm watching this interview with Chris Wallace, and it's pretty distracting trying to listen to the translator while watching Putin's lips move.

He understands it better than he speaks it.

Apparently his German is pretty fluent as well.

Because he doesn't speak English would be my guess.

Maybe, and I'm just guessing here, but maybe he doesn't speak English like 90% of other Russians.

Sounds crazy, I know.

For the same reason that Edwin Edwards spoke with a heavy Cajun accent when speaking in south Louisiana and no accent when speaking in north Louisiana....it’s called playing to your audience.

Putin isn’t speaking to American’s, he is speaking to his country.

Considering the media is looking for gotcha moments, I wouldn't trust myself to speak in a second language, where you do not 100% understand the context of words or phrases. With a translator, you get to ensure your meanings are conveyed correctly.

Because he's speaking as the President of Russia, he's representing Russia. It also happens to be his mother tongue since you know, he's Russian.

No one is ever ex-KGB. Functionally, being in the KGB is a lifetime appointment.

It’s a legit question - this interview was intended to be seen by the west, not the Russians (as far as I know). So if he wanted to appeal, then English would be the way to go.

sounds high to me.

Putin supposedly speaks great english but with a heavy accent. Using a translator is strategy for him/.
