Instead, we've decided that government is an instrument to be used against our fellow citizens to get what we want.

Did "we" (citizens) decide this or did government decide this? I totally agree fwiw

Because life is a struggle. People are evolutionally programmed to get on a team and fight to achieve goals.

Blacks vs. Blue
Blacks vs. Whites
Republicans vs. Democrats (very evident here)
Etc, etc

Imo, the only us vs them that is legit is citizens vs politicians.

Because politicians have been feeding it to the populace for a very long time, and they are indoctrinated now.

Nearly everyone here agreed that Republicans in Congress are nigh-unto worthless, but "better than Democrats". So, they celebrated the Republicans basically NOT LOSING seats already held by them like it was some major victory. Why?

Because politicians have convinced everyone that there's only two options, and no matter how bad one option is, that other option is "evil" or will "destroy our country".

The same applies to the other examples. So long as there's a divide in this country, the two parties remain in power.

Yeah, Republicans don't like Democrats, and Democrats don't like Republicans...

But I can PROMISE you they work together to make sure a third party doesn't infringe on that. They would rather swing back and forth between the two than risk becoming obsolete to a third party, even if that third party would be way more in tune with the will of the people.

Don't confuse the GOP with the right.

That is incredibly disingenuous.

I think it's been incremental frog in boiling water type stuff.

I mean, obviously, I think 99.9% of us agree that the government had to say, "yeah, about that slavery shite.........STOP!".

And, a host of other similar type things.

But, the problem is not terribly dissimilar from unions.

The power to force people to stop owning slaves is also the power to tell them who they have to serve or, what they have to do with their businesses etc etc etc.

And, even in those cases, there are legit things. "No, you can't just dump your poison in the river". Unfortunately, that power also can be, "yeah, I know you have a tiny building and no actual room for it.........but you have to put in a handicapped bathroom and if you can't, you're out of business".

Those are just VERY narrow examples. I'm not looking to dwell on them. Simply illustrate that it almost certainly started with the reasonable.

But, people are conditioned to fight for the next thing. Basically, we caught a HUGE case of "first world problems" disease and decided to use the government to cure it.
