Dealing with material leaked is a different matter. E.g., Clapper was caught in an out and out lie, just like Flynn. He should have been canned, just like Flynn.

To me, the biggest distinction is did the leakers (in any leak scenario) go through the established, proper channels for correction prior to leaking?

I'm personally thrilled with any leaks that shed light on infringements on our rights, so I didn't spend a whole lot of time looking into whether or not my meaningless opinion should favor or condemn Snowden on a personal level
I just don't see how any reasonable person can conflate leaks about right infringements with leaks over "Joe is probably a traitor lying to the Russians!!!"

So, though you and I don't differ on actions directed at leakers, we apparently differ quite a bit on actions directed at liars.

Clapper thought he could get away with an overt lie exactly under auspices that you laid out .... the Senator "put him in a real bad spot, gosh darn it. Weren't nuthin' left t'do but tell a whopper to protect national secrets."
Clapper was counting on being able to "accidentally" yet thoroughly misinform the public. He knew damn good and well any clarification of his public lie would have to occur in closed-door session.
Clapper's lie in response to Wyden's query would therefore leave the public permanently under false impression. The only thing he did not anticipate is a shite-for-security system allowing Snowden to steal piles of data, and out Clapper as a liar in the process.
Clapper's was a duplicitous gambit that he lost.
He should have been fired.
