So what is the reason behind the killing of Khashoggi? Was he just an outspoken critic of the Saudi regime?

I haven't seen any reasons for why this would have been done.

They wanted to send a message ... to make an example of him.

And they did.

This is an example of Arabs taking care of their own business. What remains to be seen is whether or not we acknowledge that, or decide to play Bitch HOA President of the World.

Saudi's are dumb as shite. Extremely low IQ people. TO say they would be living in caves that make Afghanistan look like a 5* motel would be an understatement if not for the oil under their sand. That's why the Israeli's are so tight with them and why Kushner was using Saudi Arabia as the point group for his Israel-First agenda.

Because he was promoting democracy and openness in Saudi Arabia and writing (quite mildly) critically of MBS in Arabic.

It’s Pride. Nothing more. The culture of the region is backward and still set in the 13th century. Honor killings are okay, as is stoning.

Iran and Lebanon almost transformed to Western ideals but they were dragged backward by the religious elements.

Now you have elements in the House of Saud that simply can’t take open criticism and the fomenting of ideas that run contrary to their power.

Look, I don’t care and I’m not into nation building. Just call them barbaric in their actions and move on. The simple fact is they are beneficial to us for the moment and we should keep the relationship good as long as it suits us. The region will never fully conform to Western ideals and we shouldn’t look at the area through that prism. The very idea of a nation is antithetical to their line of thought. It is more of a familial kingdom or gravitation to a tribal mindset.

And you really believe that they ignited an international firestorm for that reason? They're criticized constantly without killing anyone. There's obviously more to the story.

There very well may be. But MBS is a guy who's rocketing kids in Yemen and shook down his family after putting them under house arrest. I think he wanted to send a message to dissidents and I think he thought Trump would look the other way (Trump has of course called his own press "the enemy of the people" like a caudillo) which is basically what Trump's doing.
