Why did people on the left think Obamacare was a necessity?

I just don't get it. We already have Medicaid for poor people and Medicare for the elderly. If you don't qualify for these then you should be able to provide yourself with insurance unless you made a lot of bad decisions or aren't willing to work a little harder.

and it surprises you that the left wanted to give these people something for nothing?

Complete bullshite.

Obamacare is a fricking travesty in that it does absolutely nothing to address quality or cost (just access). It was entirely a political move. But to think our healthcare system doesn't need improvements with regard to access and cost is ridiculous.

Too many competing interests to ever make truly helpful legislation though.

The purpose of Obamacare is to lead to single payer. Obama said so. Single payer puts govt in charge of your life. Govt can do anything it wants if it effects your life. Total control.

Everyone here is spot on - this was never about getting everyone true affordable healthcare. It was about the illusion that this was a great thing for everyone, and giving away "free stuff" again, hoping it would gin up the Dem voter base for years.

Anyone remember the video of the woman saying she wouldn't have to pay for gas or her mortgage?

For the same reason people on the right thought it so:

quote:

In 2006, an insurance expansion bill was enacted at the state level in Massachusetts. The bill contained both an individual health insurance mandate and an insurance exchange. Republican Governor Mitt Romney vetoed the mandate, but after Democrats overrode his veto, he signed it into law.[61] Romney's implementation of the 'Health Connector' exchange and individual mandate in Massachusetts was at first lauded by Republicans. During Romney's 2008 presidential campaign, Senator Jim DeMint praised Romney's ability to "take some good conservative ideas, like private health insurance, and apply them to the need to have everyone insured." Romney said of the individual mandate: "I'm proud of what we've done. If Massachusetts succeeds in implementing it, then that will be the model for the nation."[62]

In 2007, a year after the Massachusetts reform, Republican Senator Bob Bennett and Democratic Senator Ron Wyden introduced the Healthy Americans Act, which also featured an individual mandate and state-based regulated insurance markets called "State Health Help Agencies".[51][62] The bill initially attracted bipartisan support but died in committee. Many of the sponsors and co-sponsors remained in Congress during the 2008 healthcare debate.[63]

So the left took what should have been a state by state issue, jumped into the middle of it, and decided what size fit everyone.

Any conservative would tell you it's a state issue, but not the left. They believe in controlling everyone's business and making everyone "equal" and under their control.

Obamacare has done nothing good for my family. It would have been better for us if nothing was ever done in the first place.

This was written by the insurance lobby to take care of the insurance lobby.

That's the problem with Dems, trying to make square pegs fit in round holes. State level ideas usually don't work nationally in the US because of the makeup of the population.

They were fooled by clever fabrications making a minor situation seem like a catastrophe.

I doesn't even really do that. Tons of people had great access but lost their docs BECAUSE of this.

If anythinf, it hurt access to care.

It was never about access. It was about one thing and one thing only... Money. That's it.

More of it for democrats who supported the law and more for the insurance companies.

There's a reason Obama's net worth has exploded under his term.
