What was the motivation and what did they hope to accomplish?

Nothing, it was a mistake. Friendly fire.
Pat Tillman died in the same manner.

It was during the 6 day war in 1967
Their intention was to sink the ship and leave no survivors and make it look like Egypt had conducted the attack. Thus the US would have entered the war against Egypt, and there’s no telling the consequences Egypt would have faced. Israel probably would have ended up with a lot more territory, but that’s all just speculation.
The guy with a bunch of numbers as a username is completely full of shite

And of course this thread is anchored, lmao

quote:yes, this is so plausible, vs in the fog of war they attacked the wrong ship. How the hell are you supposed to ensure that you sink a ship with no survivors, from the air. A ship that belongs to your closest political and military ally, who have forces and radars in the area that could confirm who was flying in the area. Antisemites simultaneously think Jews are utter morons and also so crafty that they run everything secretly, but not so secretly. It was 1967 in the middle of a war, they mistook the ship for an Egyptian one, and they owned up to the mistake

There’s no way you could listen to the survivors testimony and believe that pile of bullshite
They flew reconnaissance over it multiple times
The ship had multiple American flags
You’re a liar and a shill

A more appropriate question for an American audience is why has the US government refused to investigate the attack on the USS Liberty?

What does the Congressional investigation of the attack on the USS Liberty have to say about the alleged Israeli claim of "mistaken identity?"
What does the IDF History Department 1982 Report on the USS Liberty attack have to say about the alleged Israeli claim of "mistaken identity?"

Even if true — which is highly debatable — evidence has emerged that IDF realized that the vessel was American and allowed the attack to continue unabated.
Indeed, on June 8, 2005, the USS Liberty Veterans Association submitted a report of war crimes to the Department of Defense in accordance with the DoD Law of War Program.
After the release and review of classified DoD documents on the USS incident, the Liberty Survivors conducted an investigation into the attack which found the following facts were suppressed during the “official” inquiry:
Report On War Crimes Committed Against U.S. Military Personnel, June 8, 1967…
The report found…
• That the IDF jammed radio transmissions on both US Navy tactical and international maritime distress frequencies;
• Used unmarked aircraft to attack the USS Liberty;
•Deliberately fired upon personnel deploying life rafts in anticipation of an order to abandon ship;
• And that the U.S. Navy recalled two flights of rescue aircraft launched from Sixth Fleet aircraft carriers.
The decades long coverup of these facts by the U.S. Government was both deliberate and criminal.
