When was the pill introduced to mass market? Maybe the Census data correlates nicely with it, but I'm skeptical the pill is a singular explanation of the decline, as places like the USSR were declining before 1960, and saw a precipitous decline below replacement in 1967.

The pill not only kills birth rates but it empowers people to have as much sex as they want without consequence.

Been brainwashed into believing not having kids is the way to happiness.
During W W II women were forced into the workforce. It was discovered they were excellent. dependable workers.

Women who are dependable mothers are too valuable in the workforce for big business, to waste them rearing children.
Let the welfare queens spit out a child and keep them at home.

Every domestic animal that humans have bred to improve utility, it was by selecting the top breeding stock.

In the USA, human animals have been treated the opposite. We incentivise bad people to have more kids
Then we incentivise good workers to have less, while making them subsidise the bad parents.

We are doomed by not following the science.

I'd like to see those numbers.

From the US Census Data, it shows the fall from 3.21 in 1964 to 2.48 in 1970, which is where the historical data ends. I believe it is on the 67th page of this document in the left hand column. LINK

I’m sure it’s a variety of the reasons which have already been stated, like anything else.

But it is a problem.

Ya, I agree with you. The elite class has exported all of the male jobs overseas but I'm not sure that was avoidable.

I agree with this. White women want all the money and power, but none of the responsibility. Once upon a time women would be applauded for working and it was easy to gain notoriety in a male dominated society. Women still were able to maintain gender roles despite their rise in the job market, now everything has adjusted and men have grown up seeing women offered all the same opportunities they have had, but even more in many cases.

They still want to project the traditional image of a woman ON TOP of her career achievements. They refuse to "marry down".

Hell, even women who have little to no career accomplishments want men far above their level today.

It was available in most cities by 1961-2. My mom was way past her time by then but my younger aunt started taking it.
It's timing coincided with the free sex movement of college kids that hit around 1966 (coinciding with rock and roll as well as the drug culture).
Zach, being a righteous man, did not participate in the free sex college movement. But the rock music was great.

We had one at 27, and stopped there. She's hell on wheels.

Plus, I'll be 45 when she goes off to college and have 30 years to travel.

I think automation is more of the killer of the "good manufacturing jobs" but offshoring has a role to play as well.

The US has shifted to a "knowledge, service" economy and in the process has left behind a large swatch of the population and all the good jobs are centralizing in the major urban centers.

Small town America is dead and dying on the vine with nothing left but misery and sadness in its wake.

The changing demographics and ever increasing cost of living make it a pretty dire situation for most people.

Cramming everyone into megacities to work their lives away and not know their neighbors and no sense of community is a dystopian nightmare that we are living in real time.

Be careful. I know some guys who had their retirement all planned out. Then they got divorced around 40. Remarried a younger lady about 30 who wanted kids. Those guys kept working till 75 because the kids weren't finished with college and didn't qualify for scholarships.

Many of us delay having kids until we have achieved financial stability.

It does fit in with some of the data, but it seems 1957 and 58 were the highest years recorded by the Census Bureau, and then a smaller decline started happening. What's weird is in the demographic data, fairly developed countries all started declining at the same time, towards the end of the 50's. The decline from 1958 to 1968 was very steep.

Many factors involved in the decline but I would argue the destruction of the traditional family is the cause. I watched this trend (couples simply hooking up and avoiding having babies)develop in the late fifties. Actually started with the introduction of the birth control pill. Women could fornicate without fear of getting pregnant. The culture, with the sexually explicit images in movies lit a raging fire in young people already dealing with raging hormones. Then the abortion culture, and the militant feminist who went about trashing motherhood.

But without a doubt I would say Hollywood and the sex and violence that industry vomits, along with artificial birth control and the feminist movement just destroyed the institution of traditional family. Add government confiscatory tax policy and manipulation of currency and we're now to the point where our birthrate has collapsed. IMO that collaspe will have far reaching negative impact on America.

My poor grandchildren.

A lot of good reasons to interesting question. I don't think it's a White thing but middle class and up.
Summed up to 2 things.
1. Decline in family - divorce is easy, staying single is easy. Right or wrong in the past divorce was looked down on. Having a kid outside of marriage was looked down on. These are pretty main stream these days. Odds of multiple kids go way down for both.
2. Cost of a family. Almost requires 2 working parents. Before you say people want more stuff. Both sets of my grandparents were single working family. Both college educated, pharmacist and small business owner. I am the same, my career pays same as both of these today. My family does not have near what my grandparents had for just about the same family structure. 2 parents working greatly reduces multiple kids or at least more than 2.

This is the only point I'd push back on. People are going to flock the urban centers I think that cycle is ending (work from home and better family life, education etc..) and I do think millennials will start popping kids out this decade. Hopefully they do because we need that aggregate demand boost to survive the leverage

WWII. Troops came home and Levit invented the suburbs so they could get married and have sex without parents around. That caused a birth spike in the 50s. At some point they had to take a break from the bedroom.
