My story...

My dad was actually forced to pick cotton as a child and was beaten if he didn’t pick the most.

My grandmother was a first gen immigrant from Ireland whose family tree almost died off due to the potato famine.

My grandfather was a full blood Indian whose parents married across tribes because most of their family died during the trail of tears

As a child I ate poke salad picked fresh from the highway. We had to keep an eye out for snakes, and they were everywhere. That WAS the meal most days. Nothing with it...just poke salad. The “treat” for the week was cinnamon toast on Sunday morning. In short, we were as poor as frick. FWIW, we weren’t allowed to have food stamps as this was on a reservation, so federal assistance wasn’t available at the time.

I got worms once from chickens (we didn’t eat them so we could sell the eggs...we ate “powdered eggs” instead. It went great with the powdered milk). To get rid of the worms, our “medicine man” fed me eggshells fried in butter and brown sugar. The worms would eat the egg shell bits which would kill them. I would shite them out later.

Oh, I also went to public school in south Louisiana (with a sizable minority population no less).

I joined the military to serve my country with the added benefit of the GI Bill. It was a shite job, but I learned a lot about myself in the process. I don’t regret one second. On an additional note, my grandfather served in WW II. He was severely injured (probably should have died based on what I have read), but somehow survived. When the tribes began banking cash through casinos, I checked into financial assistance for my college loans that I took out for expenses not covered by the GI Bill. Get this, the Military listed my grandfather as white. His parents were dead so the tribe denied the compensation as he didn’t have a birth certificate (surprise...he wasn’t born in a hospital). IIRC, the military denied him compensation and directed him to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In short...no assistance equals extreme poverty. Such is life.

Soooooooooo, where do I rank in the oppression Olympics? Did I at least medal?
