Because they live in literature. Their lives are fantastical stories that aren’t based in truth and they have lost the ability to separate fact from fiction. It’s the thing that makes them wonderfully interesting people and also insane nut jobs.

It's interesting to note that one of the books you'll find in the syllabus as required reading is "Silas Marner." It's a miserable, shitty story that has no reason to be on any reading list, but it is there simply because the author was a woman who used a man's name as a pseudonym to get the book published because (it is claimed) she could not get published as a woman due to sexism among publishers at the time. Essentially, our sophomore English teachers in high school were cutting edge with the DEI mentality.
Of note, however, is the fact that the professor of the only English class I was required to take in college was (despite the long hair, beard, and sandals that made up his daily attire) very deeply conservative in his political beliefs. I have to admit, it shocked the hell out of me.

Miserable women with dead end, low paying jobs. All of my English teachers were middle aged, unattractive women.

Mostly.
One older white male.

True. I’ve been out of school for 40 years now and I remember my high school English teachers were all nut cases even back then.

The only thing that I would add is that if they aren't naturally very far left leaning they quickly fall into line on this because they know that outside of academia, they likely starve. They will push whatever narrative is currently raking in the research funds, i.e. climate theory.

Teaching has changed so much. None and I mean none of my teachers talked about anything other than the subjects they were teaching. I couldn't tell you a thing about their political leanings. Well maybe one theology teacher who was clearly liberal / anti-death penalty but that is to be expected of a theology teacher. All the rest. no clue. From what I see now, they spend as much time teaching social issues as they spend on their subject matter.
Big generalization for the teachers today but the average teacher today does spend more time speaking about their life than they ever did when I was in high school 1000 years ago. I think that same Theology teacher is the only teacher I knew anything about their personal life, mainly because he was so excited when he got married.

Teaching social issues would be an improvement.
They teach a world view, from one perspective only.

The Radical American Left conquered American education a long time ago.
