Which city is more liberal: Madison Wisconsin or Austin Texas?

Both are in the top 5 nationally.

Madison is more “traditionally liberal” in the sense that it is very leftwing on economics and labor politics. (Madison has the highest number of union workers per capita of any city in America, and the highest number of co-op businesses per capita). I also remember reading somewhere that at one point, socialist party members controlled more than half of the city council?

Austin is more “woke”. Labor politics and anti capitalist activism isn’t as strident in Austin as in Madison, but Austinites are more left on immigration and maybe certain social issues.

For those who have traveled a lot to both places, what would you say?

Madison has always been Moscow-light.

Austin is a relatively recent development.

IDK, but if Wisconsin plays Texas in football, after the game all points will be evenly divided.

So I think they are very different.

Madison is as you stated more traditional. The support social safety nets, unions, free speech and the such.

Austin is more or you woke or dirty liberal. By that I mean you misfit liberal who hates everything and wants to burn everything down. The do not wants the haves and the haves. They would prefer to have everyone be have nots. They are more in support for all the the skyscreaching liberal agenda, from open borders to letting homeless people live everywhere, to cops are bad and criminals are misunderstood.

But I haven't been to madison in a while.

Almost 60% of the people in Austin voted to end homeless camping.

No, Austin has been liberal for a long time. It was started by the hippies, whose philosophy was "let me be different". In recent years, the liberalism has morphed into a more aggressive "you need to be/think like me".

Yes, Madison still reminds me more largely of traditional primarily white upper Midwestern well-educated and well-meaning-but-amazingly-naive-to-the-point-of-self-elimination simply because it “feels good” liberalism.

Austin nowdays seems more outright radical leftist/Marxist and intent on establishing itself as California’s easternmost city.

Just my two cents anyway.

Both are ruined as far as livability. A friend who has been in Austin for 40 years says it's been completely ruined by leftwing politics.

Have never been to Austin but I hate Madison with the fire of a thousand suns.

It's been called Berkeley of the Midwest for decades. It's a fairly decent comparison.

Madison more progressive I think.

I live here. A difficult existence at times.

Travis county 72 % biden
27 % trump

Dane county 75% biden
22% trump

I am jealous of people on this site who live in more balanced areas

Dane county

I feel like Austin liberals over compenstate for their liberalism due to the fact the rest of the state is red.
