Subsidies are protectionism and welfare.

The reason they get bailed out is most farms are run by corporations that lobby and bring envelopes of money to bureaucrats and government officials.
Small independent farms take the money to survive and make a few bucks. They are influenced to take the money by the federal agencies and told to not rock the boat.

This.

Seems a little dramatic. I'm not sure why so many conservatives have a dislike for farmers. It's like the importance of food isn't completely understood. There needs to be reforms, but some of you really seem to want our food supply to be volatile.
Reckless government spending hurts our country whether it’s poor people or farmers. We can’t be selective in where we cut and need to continue to take a chainsaw to spending. Elon said there would be pain.

This is where reciprocal tariffs will be good. If we can't sell our crops to other countries because of tariffs, then the reciprocal should hold true.

We need Farm more than Pharm. Last time I tried to grow some veggies in the backyard, I had a beautiful wall of bean vines, no beans. I am not confident in my abilities to sustain my family's nutritional needs via backyard agriculture. If anything SHOULD be protected, it is the country's food supply. How is this NOT obvious?

Why are we subsidizing? Your govt is controlling the food supply. Hell, they pay farmers NOT to produce at times.

The government completely fricks with the economics of farming. I think the government needs to step back and determine what type of market interference they should be running first. That is the first step and go from there.

As someone who grew up in a family of farmers... I am willing to bet that there is a shite ton of fraud of going on there.
As a suburbanite I'll take your word for it; aside from tending the tomato patch in my yard I've no knowledge of farming.
How about we start by not allowing hostile foreigners like chicomms to purchase US farmland?
Also, it makes me nervous that a fiend like Bill Gates owns as much farmland as he does. Screaming welfare queen farmers aren't nearly as dangerous as Gates is, even if screaming welfare queens are odious.

I’m uneducated on the subject but I remember reading a ton of large subsidies go to the food manufacturers that produce junk food due to welfare.
separate issue, no? The farmers don't produce junk food. If their commodities are used to produce junk food, that's not on them.
Thats on Frito Lay .

If farmers were actually incentivized to grow Whole Foods then this would have big downstream benefits on our health, but big cost savings in healthcare.
Dude, farmers grow crops. They are growing "whole foods". What someone else produces with that crop isn't on the farmer. Thats like blaming a steel mill for producing steel cause Casue Ford makes a car with it.

Bigpharma isn’t keeping me alive day to day. Food producers are.

Speaking with my uncle who is a farmer I’m not sure that’s been the case lately. Pecan farmers in central Georgia lost everything from Helene & got $0 in assistance

Yes, I agree that it is effed up to pay farmers not to farm- and I know its about price controls and it sucks.
I also think food is for the living, not for gas tanks.
Investigate and fix those two items? I'm in agreement. Screwing around further than that with the nation's food supply? Please don't. I don't wanna eat ze bugs.

Neither is BigAg
I can source my own if needed.
Farmers are addicted to welfare, and corporate farms are the biggest winners.

Just a few weeks ago in my area(NW Missouri), a reality tv series family got caught committing insurance fraud for millions of dollars. Took monies from crop insurance losses. (Steve McBee). Farms around 15-20000 acres. He pled guilty but hasn’t been sentenced yet. But yet he is still building car washes all over the area and his family has renewed for another season on Peacock. His Facebook pops up daily with his short clips. Seems like a nice enough guy, but I can’t get over he robbed me of my tax dollars.

There is a world of difference between the large corporate farmers and the guys with a couple thousand acres
Posted on 2/21/25 at 9:16 am to WeeWee
They can start by looking at the Chinese and Indian ‘dot on forehead types’ controlling the poultry /pig farms first.

Farmers and roofers should be audited. All scams to take money offered through lobbyists and insurance companies.

We need to do away with this type of bs.
But i have no issue with helping farms that actually produce food for the entire nation.
quote:
Section 22007 of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) provides financial assistance for farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners who experienced discrimination by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in USDA farm lending prior to 2021.
quote:
Relief for Black Farmers - Section 1005 of the American Rescue Plan (ARP)
The American Rescue Plan includes two provisions to provide needed relief to Black, Indigenous, and Farmers of Color.
But i have no issue with helping farms that actually produce food for the entire nation.
