re: What should we do about the homeless problem?

I also think tagging all the homeless with a required ID tag that shows where they are assigned to so police can see if they're abiding by laws.
"Ihre Papiere, bitte!" No, thanks. I'm against a surveillance/police state.

Also make it a crime to panhandle and a crime to give to them.
Making charity illegal? We have enough dumb, overreaching laws in this country. We don't need more.

I think a lot of these people are just begging and not wanting to work like normal people do.
If the government and its citizens stop giving handouts, then the problem will work itself out.

I've suggested in the past we round up all the homeless in the major cities and bus them out to the rural Midwest and dump them there to start their new lives, or drop them off in Puerto Rico, Guam, and the other outlying territories of the Empire. Apartment rates in the rural midwest are real low and 10 of them can split a studio 10 ways and have bunk beds for dirt cheap.
Questions -
Who is "we"? The FBI? Who should do this?
How much would this cost?
What rural community in say, Iowa or South Dakota or Wyoming would accept the homeless - many with frug and mental health issues which make them homless - from the ghetto's of Miami, Atlanta, Detroit, etc.
Why would Puerto Rico accept them, they have enough problems right now. What legal right would you have to deposit these people there and why do you suggest Guam as a depository. It lies far away in the Pacific ocean. It would seem to me to be much cheaper just to, I dunno, get the homeless the mental health they need instead of shipping them farther away than Hawaii on some kind of governmental aircraft?
But maybe that's just me.

Truth.

This.
Mentall illness, alcohol and drug addiction. Or all the above. There is no other reason for a person to REMAIN on the street.
I can see a very small percent of people who lose a job or a business closes ending up “down on their luck”, but those folks end up in shelters. They end up finding programs and safety nets that can get them into housing and a job of some sort.
Drunks, junkies, and bipolar people aren’t too good at filling out forms.

A relatively small percentage of all homeless people nationwide — 13% to 15% — are mentally ill, but their symptoms — paranoia and delusions — draw attention and mislead others into thinking their numbers are greater, Culhane said.

In my experience, the overwhelming majority are addicts.

Yep. Also a lot have never had a proper diagnosis. Also they self medicate with drugs or alcohol.
But you are right. Most are going to be drugs or alcohol.

Just laugh at them and give them tainted food.

Step 1: Tell beggar "No!" before they can even finish the question.
Step 2: If the beggar keeps advancing toward you, put your dukes up and shout, "Don't get within striking distance!"
Step 3: If the beggar still advances, then strike repeatedly and mercilessly.
Step 4: If questioned by the cops say, "I feared for my life."
Step 5: Start referring to yourself as "Batman: The Hero We Deserve" at dinner parties.

Stop giving them money. There are programs in place and shelters for them if they really want help. The majority are just shitbags who want you to give them money and have no intention of ever bettering their situation.

Elect a Democrat as President. The problem will magically disappear.

The ones who are verifiably mentally ill should be institutionalized.
Where? There are very few mental hospitals, or space in wards. Even people who are able and willing to pay any amount of money have great difficulty finding placement for family members.

We need better mental health care, give them access to meds, addiction programs, help them learn a trade, temp housing to get on their feet, etc. I would rather allocate resources to help these people get going than giving people money and resources to keep spitting out kids and living off the government. Like I said, I bet most are mentally ill and not just lazy people with bad luck. I’m sure there are some true losers but even if half are in situations they can’t control, I’d like to see us help them. Giving them a few bucks and a free meal here and there won’t change their situations.
How many of them have ID and SS cards? Do they know how to get these without the resources they need? Does it cost money to acquire these things? Would they need a mailing address? They would need both to get a job as well as access to clean themselves up for interviews. Also, how do they get to work? I realize a sane person with a little fire could figure some of this out but we’re not talking about you and I.

The actual problem?
Or
The reporting about the problem?

Then blame the courts. They made the ruling on de-instituionalization decades ago.

It really discourages me when I drive up to intersections where homeless folks are always "working" ... and they'll be gone, but piles of food, to include fresh fruit .. .will simply be sitting there ... abandoned.
IMO, hunger is an excellent motivator.
These people are not starving ... otherwise, they would not abandon perfectly good food.
They just want free money to go buy drugs, booze, scratch-offs, etc.

It's becoming an epidemic
No, it isn't. It became an issue at the end of the '70s/beginning of the '80s when many of the laws allowing them (most homeless are deeply addicted/mentally ill or both) to be institutionalized were struck down. This resulted in many institutions closing their doors. There was a period of adjustment as many of them were violent enough to end up in corrections facilities or other mental health facilities, but many remained on the street.
And that lack of a system remains. This is still a free country, so the government doesn't just have carte blanche to just relocate folks on a whim - there would have to be some crime or public policy advanced to justify that, and it would incur years/decades of legal challenge.
quote:
Also make it a crime to panhandle and a crime to give to them.
There are slews of these.
quote:
I also think hiring a bunch as laborers to work as grunts to help build the Trump Wall will save a bunch of taxpayers their hard earned money, will allow these people to serve their country and save some money.
If these folks were capable/willing to do this, they wouldn't be homeless - like I said, deeply addicted, mentally ill or both.

Very easy solution; just shoot them! I promise they'll find a place to go.
Posted on 10/23/17 at 2:32 pm to Parmen
Send them to Germany as political refugees.
