Who is our common enemy? The Cold War ended 25 years ago.

NATO is not the problem per se. The problem is the expansion of NATO in 1999. Those small countries that were former WARSAW Pact countries are the issue and give the Russians pause for concern.

They aren't an enemy. Yet.

We've had enough war. Archaic treaties need to be reexamined

and once again, they are far from a friend and there is a reasonably possible scenario in the future where the scales could be tipped

and NATO is far from archaic. it has a bunch of uses in todays modern world. it does however need to be re worked to where countries like germany start putting in their far shair

or maybe we can promote people to start defending themselves
Can you give a detailed plan on how to accomplish this?

as SFP stated in this thread, hard line spending requirements relative to a countries GDP would be a great start

So, while disagreeing you agree? That's confusing

That would greatly dwindle down NATO as a whole too

no? i agree that european member countries need to start putting in their fair share. i disagree that we need to completely disregard the treaty altogether

So the suggestion is to dismantle one of the main reasons for the relatively peaceful post-war era will somehow prevent further war? The weakening of the EU (the formation of which was driven by the desire to not ever see war on European soil again) and NATO (which worked as a check on Soviet aggression, and still works as a check on Russian desires for regional influence) aren't good things for peace. In fact their weakening points towards more war, not less.

And if they don't meet those requirements?

i really do not expect the large members of NATO to exit after that because its not in their best interests to do so. however

I agree that NATO is still valid and important and other countries need to actually contribute. I think the threat of the US leaving would be enough to have them actually participate. The recent Russia worship is naive and they are certainly not a friend. The Cold War may have ended but it could start back up at any moment.

France left NATO for 43 years and it was a founding member. But NATO is an American led organization, we derive military power by having the alliance, ensuring foreign forces are trained to US standards, having access to bases, maintaining leverage over alliance member political activity.

Just because it has been abused in the past eight years by bad US policy does not mean it can not be useful or relevant for today.
