It's probably a little bit of that.
Has more to do with attacking Christianity than anything else, the thought countless people being happy both mentally and spiritually outside of the secular belief system makes them insane.

The Thelema group and other Left Hand Path groups don't "exist in any meaningful way"?
They are extreme fringe groups. Is that what you mean? If that's what you meant to say then I agree. They are small extreme fringe groups, but they do exist, and those who follow the Left Hand Path would tell you that their existence is meaningful.
Do What Thou Wilt Shall be the Whole of the Law. Translated into common English, this means, do whatever the Hell pleases you and tell the law, customs, norms and mores to frick Off.

PS Thelema is probably the most harmless of the Left Hand Path groups.

It's been a while since I've attended Sunday school (or church) so I could have some of my data confused.
If I recall, Satan is mentioned only a couple times in the Old Testament. He wasn't a big deal for Jews. Ha satan literally means the accuser or the adversary in Hebrew. He makes an appearance in Job and in a couple other books. Nothing major.
"Lucifer" means light-bringer and derives from the Latin translation of Isaiah, in a passage that in Hebrew some scholars say actually referred to the King of Babylon.
The devil has a bigger role in the New Testament primarily in the temptation of Christ story.
There's not much about Satan from just a bare reading of the Bible.
