What are your thoughts on business licenses?

I was listening to a conservative (?) commentator talking about how business licenses are a good thing and I was thinking ‘Isn’t that just another tax?’

All licenses are terrible and should not exist. In fact, they used to be unconstitutional, and still should be. The government should not be allowed to take away your freedoms and then sell them back to you.
On the flip side, private trade organizations should offer certifications. That way, consumers can decide which certifications they trust and decide for themselves whether or not to work with a certified contractor, barber, doctor, etc or not. Insurers could then decide whether they would be willing to cover those who are not certified by this organization or that. Let the free market decide the barriers to entry rather than the government.

Being that I'm a licensed PE and my company holds Certificates-of-Authorization to operate in several states, I'm all for it. Professional licensure protects the public from people "claiming" to be experts in their respective fields and insures that license holders are qualified profesionals. That being said, I am not a fan of having to get a license to hunt/fish.

the purpose of requiring a business license is so you can be sure the person you hire is knowledgeable in their profession and since being bonded and retaining insurance is a requirement of retaining a license so you can be sure the person you hire is insured and bonded.
its designed to protect the individual in cases where you need to file a claim against and sue a business.
has it been bastardized by politicians to become a tax grab, yes, but at its core it serves as a valuable protection for customers

All regulations are hidden taxes.

True, but just like purchasing a road and bridge privilege tax when you buy a car tag, professionals pay a privilege tax to operate in various states. Sure it costs a little money but it protects the consumer and professional.

No it isn't. That is the secondary reason. The primary reason is for taxation purposes. Whether or not you pose any risk to the public most places require a business license regardless to help them track tax revenues.

I'm against them.
I own a pest control company and I benefit from them, because it keeps competitors out. The myth is the these laws keep people safer. They don't.
If government cared about people being safe from pesticides, state inspectors would be hanging around Home Depot instead of badgering licensees, because the vast majority of chemical poisonings are done by do it yourselfers.
You should see the CEUs I have to take. A 9 year old could pass them w flying colors.
License laws are there for two reasons; keep competitors out, which means we can charge more than we otherwise would and more money to government coffers.
