The United States is planning to cancel the visas of thousands of Chinese graduate students believed by President Donald Trump’s administration to have links with China’s military, two sources with knowledge of the matter said on Thursday.

The move, first reported by the New York Times, could impact 3,000 to 5,000 Chinese students and could be announced as early as this week, according to the sources, including a current U.S. official and another individual who was briefed on the administration’s internal discussions.

quote:

Some 360,000 Chinese nationals who attend U.S. schools annually generate economic activity of about $14 billion, largely from tuitions and other fees.

The decision on the visas is likely to further sour ties between the world’s top two economies - also at odds over the coronavirus pandemic and trade.

Deliberations on the visa move have been in the works for months, the sources said. While not directly related to the tensions over Hong Kong, the timing appears to be part of “an overall pressure campaign” against China that has intensified in recent months, the source familiar with discussions said.

Letting those people infiltrate our universities and their research departments couldn't have been more stupid.

If America falls the cause of death will be suicide.

Our enemies love how stupid we are.

My "conservative" libtard sister in law will melt over this. Her nephew is married to a Chinese grad student whose dad works with China's military/government. I can't wait to see what she's going to have to say about this. It should be golden

They're in our military, too.

We don't have enough American grad students to fill all positions and the ones we do have are often outcompeted by foreigners. It's rare to have even half of the grad students in departments of some fields be Americans.

How many of them are spies? Would be nice to see a couple of them ride the lightning for espionage.

This is what I said in yesterday's thread about it. Deserves to be mentioned again

This is awesome. When I started grad school, we had 5 chinese students on the roll. First day of class only 2 were to be found. The other 3 entered the country then fled to go do who knows what.

Simple solution, cut slots... lower costs by cutting unnecessary staff...

frick the Chinese, all of them...

I was just stating a fact.

So the slots are unnecessary because they were Chinese...? We have a higher demand for grad students than we can supply with our own students. We are currently the most attractive place in the world to learn and to practice science.

Slots will not be cut - they make too much money for the professors and drive too much grant money. Grad students are the backbone of research. Medical research requires armies of them. The Chinese will just be replaced by Indian grad students or other Asian grad students. This is just a fact.

While I don't disagree I did have an awesome physics TA that loved metallica (especially the t-shirt he wore everyday) and was generally and all around awesome dude.

Why would the slots get cut because the Chinese are kicked out? They will just be replaced by someone else.

This happens all the time with visa pulls. The money is still there, it'll just pay somebody else.

Positive anecdotes not allowed! All of them are bad!

WTF are you talking about? Until they can be properly vetted through a mechanism that ensures they are not working for a hostile government, the common sense approach would be to block every single one of them...

Given our current state, you have to assume they are all indeed "bad"...

Why would you even consider giving hostile actors access to research in any manner?
