Your VP and GI Bill are not welfare, they're part of a defined benefits package for literally giving up a significant portion of your personal sovereignty in order to serve.

You missed my point. I was explaining that even good and reasonable social assistance programs can be abused. You knee jerk reactioned and insulted me because i used an example of military programs (since its the only social program i know about directly).

If we just HAVE to continue entitlements like welfare, then they should cover the absolute bare necessities. Flour, milk, beans, whole chickens only, etc. You want bread? Make it. You want a luxury item like steak or lobster? Get a job and make the money.

Incentives for military service is a quid pro quo. There is a valid, reasonable, Constitutionally-proscribed federal function associated with these incentives. To agree with you to a point, the DOD is rife with fraud, waste and abuse. They should pay a private company obscene amounts of money just to root all of that out.
But, I digress. There is literally no Federal function supportable by a reasonable interpretation of the plain language of the Constitution to buy (anyone, able-bodied or not) folks' groceries, pay their electric bill/rent, provide them free phone, free public transportation, etc.
So, any of that that is abused is already a double crime. Not comparable at all, IMHO.
