Without the 17th Amendment, Democrats would lose so many senators. Doug Jones would not have been elected, McCaskill in Missouri would be gone, Dems would not a senator from Montana or North Dakota. Need to get to work on this. The Republic's future depends on it.

Well, good luck.

For the record, you're going to have a lot more success in framing it as a way for states to reclaim a check and balance against the Feds than 'muh democrats'. That wouldn't work anyway, unfortunately.

Probably the worst amendment. The Senate was meant to be the house of the state. As it is now, senators are basically glorified house reps.

Totally agree. Absolutely no chance this ever happens though

Well I live in NY, run by Cuomo, Schumer, and Gilibrand. I can't frame it in anyway. Need to get the red states on board.

17th Amendment is a fricking travesty, and part of a group of the worst Amendments ever (16-19)

It's not going to happen. I wish it could, but it won't. This is not a resignation to defeat - I would just implore anyone who really wants to turn back the clock, so to say, to be engaged in creating parallel institutions rather than thinking that anything other than tapping the brakes can be done on the existing system.

Sitting senators and the establishment would absolutely meltdown and do everything they could to torpedo it.

The only way to get it repealed is getting state legislatures on board. And that kind of organizing is going to be hard, especially since they'll have so much bullshite opposition against it.

I applaud this. Best explanation of what's going on. The people have their voice in the House of Representatives. The Senate was intended, like you said, to the be the House of the States. The state legislatures possess the wisdom needed to choose senators, tasked with confirming executive appointments, approving treaties, and other such duties. We've lost our way.

I agree with you. I think it would help clean up some of the swampiness

Do you people not understand that state legislatures are more corrupt than the federal?

There wouldn't have been many Republican Senators in the South for pretty much the entire 20th Century if not for the 17th Amendment.

If more and more of the left wants the 2nd repealed, you eventually get enough interested in a Constitutional convention where both could be put on the table

Why does not someone actually put up a bill, just for fun, someone like Rand Paul for instance?

Yes. The Founders were genius in that regard. Property owners only. Someone with a real stake in governance and protecting property rights.

Far more importantly, repealing the 17th amendment would give the state's a say in the federal government again. Remember, the Senate was the state's house and the House of Representatives is supposed to be the people's house. If the senators were appointed by state legislators again, the federal government couldn't shove things like ObamaCare down our throats.
