A SAW??? That doesn't sound like a SAW, plus it didn't jam enough for it to be a SAW. If it ain't a SAW it damn sure wasn't a 240B.

Its crew served so the other guy can spray CLP on the bolt when you fire. Never was a fan.
Now a 240B is like driving a sports car, smooth.

If it was a SAW, there would be alot more dead people. Probably juiced ARs to shoot Auto with 40 round magazines, but could have slapped hundred round cans on them.

Two combat guys called into savage this afternoon and both swore it was a 240.

The sound and the carnage would support that, will be interesting to see what he had.

hen I heard the videos from the concert, the first thing I said was, that sounds like a SAW
I said the exact same thing haha. I seriously doubt he had a SAW, but it did sound a lot like a SAW through the tinny recording mics of all the cell phones filming

An insanely bad arse piece of equipment for sending thousands of rounds down range in the blink of an eye.

Or a GAU-8 on a windy day!

You can buy a semi version from FN nowadays for like $8k. Wonder if he modified one, although I've heard it's almost impossible to do

They are saying this guy had mounts and scopes
Probably a bipod and scope on his rigs.
You have to be careful listening to the media reports as they typically have no idea about firearms.

He probably had drums. That first volley sounded like more than 60 rounds.
Curious as to whether it was 7.72 or 5.56.
Didn’t sound like auto fire. Sounded like a bump stock.

SAW gunners don't usually serve in crews. The usually carries his own box mags or nutsacks, and they usually load their own weapon. Of course you can run any LMG or MWMG in a crew if you want, but it's really not that necessary unless you are conducted an ambush or something.
They are reliable if maintained properly (which is a problem in a lot of support units that have these weapons, like trans companies). I like the rate of fire, but dislike the stock bipod and the range, especially in environments like afghanistan. The carrying capacity of the 249 is better than the 7.62 MK 48, so some people prefer it for urban terrain or places where terrain features force up close fighting.
The MK 48 is basically a 7.62 version of the SAW. I prefer it to the M249 because of the increased range, but fairly compact size. The 240L kinda bridged the gap between the 240 and the 249, but I had problems with that system on several occasions. It's also long and cumbersom relative to the 249 or MK 48. Bad compromise IMO, but i guess it was never really intended to be a compromise, but a replacement for the heavy 240B. In 2012, there was a memo published that stated mounting the 240L on a tripod or vehicle mount might result in the damage to the internal components, I assume because the weapon is secured so firmly to its mount that it vibrates the internals more intensely, but I never dug that deep into it. We switched back to the 240Bs and used the MK 48 instead of the SAW when necessary.

It's hard to really know from the recordings, but it didn't sound like a 240 to me. sounded like 5.56. Again though, impossible for me to really know.

Did I misread your post, or were you just knocking the saw?

Well, if it somehow was a SAW, there's a shady gun dealer somewhere shitting his pants right now.

No kidding lol.
I think I remember an article from years ago that talked about the thousands of military weapons that were "lost" of the back of trucks and ended up in motorcycle gangs and black panther type organizations. I don't think I have ever heard of a crime committed with a military machine gun, so maybe they were just buying em up to keep em out of dangerous people's hands?

They came up with a shorter lighter variant of the 240 for
Afghanistan but I never saw one.
I never trusted the 249, had a jam the first time I fired one and never got over it, never had an issue with 240 but I never had to carry one either.
