Some believe the crossing was as dangerous as battle. Just the crossing could have been a disaster. Remember, it was at night with gigantic blocks of ice floating down the river. If boats would have been sunk by the floating ice, panic and chaos would insue.
That was the main reason the Hessian forces were completely surprised. No one could forsee that Washington would do that.
