Independent is no longer a party in LA. I think they moved all of them to “no party”

You have to sign this and declare which party you belong to, or not one at all. Says here your independent
Wife is an independent and they didn’t ask her which ballot to take, simply led her to booth and she could only vote amendments. I was under assumption that unless you specifically ask for a dem or republican ballot as an independent you couldn’t vote. They didn’t appear to make people decide. Not good if every poll watcher doesn’t follow same rules.

Independent is no longer a party in LA.
[embed]The Independent Party of Louisiana officially dissolved on August 1, 2025, as the state transitioned to a closed primary system for key federal and state elections. Approximately 150,000 voters who were previously registered as "Independent" were automatically reclassified as "No Party" (unaffiliated) to ensure they retained the ability to vote in upcoming closed primaries.[/embed]
Still had to pick a side for the current primary.
...and they should have known they aren't affiliated with anything anymore.
[embed]Legal Restrictions: The state legislature reinstated a ban on political parties using the name "Independent" or "Independent Party" to prevent future voter confusion, as many previously believed "Independent" registration meant they were unaffiliated with any party.[/embed]

When i was 18, independent truly meant that (i think)
The forms third choice was something like "no affiliation " it didn't say independent exactly

Yeah, mine was pretty clear I needed to do it regardless..cause I told her I was staying no party and was good tongo..and she said no, they still want you to sign....so I checked republican

Happened to my wife. She was none too happy. I’m guessing it has to do with the switch from the “Jungle Primary” to closed primaries.
This is exactly right, and the state has been advertising to tell people about the changes.
If you don’t have a party affiliation, you basically have to pick one for each election. It doesn’t change your registration. If you signed no party you would only vote on the amendments yesterday

After I signed in, Conservative Party, yes, you can register as a conservative in LA. The card was given to the booth manager? who in turn punched a few buttons on the BACK of the booth. Then you vote. Could not vote for the 2 party races, but could for any of the amendments.

There was no 3rd choice. The machines are set up to display either the DIM candidates or the Rep candidates. Not both
Just so you know there was a 3rd choice. Neither would be lit up.

There was absolutely a 3rd choice...not a 3rd party, but a choice of no party affiliation. 100%
So, after the explanation here, it would have let me only vote on amendments, and no primary

Primaries are not necessarily state elections. They are PARTY elections by which various political parties select a nominee to represent their party in the general election. If, however, you were registered as Independent, then you could have stuck with an Independent ballot and voted on various referenda and non-party specific items that appeared on the ballot, but you would not have had a slate of candidates from which to select a nominee. If you wanted to have a say in the nominee of a particular party you would have to opt for that party's ballot in order to have that option available.

The sheet is to prevent people from switching parties for the runoff.

No. There was no 3rd choice for the primary. He was asking why he had to sign a form to vote IN THE PRIMARY, if he was Independent
Checking the 3rd box would not have allowed him to vote in either primary. So it wasnt a 3rd choice to vote in the primary
quote:
Could they have NOT let me vote for not signing?
That was his question. My answer was YES, you were not voting for candidates, unless you chose a particular primary. Checking the 3rd option would also not be voting for a candidate. He admitted to checking Republican so he could vote in that primary
