Vacationing in Michigan and the restaurants are closed

Up near Muskegon, Whitehall, Pentwater, and Ludington. Many restaurants are closed. Some went out of business after this past year, and others havent found enough workers to reopen for the summer. Some are choosing to serve dinner only. All are having trouble finding people to work.
Most have signs like this one, where they chose to have the outside open and the inside closed.
Gretchen Whitmer is so proud of herself for saving the people of Michigan as businesses are shuttering. The crowds are smaller, as people dont want to spend their vacation looking for an open bar/restaurant.

Thanks for the warning. Don't go to Michigan courtesy of Gretchen Whitmer.

Northern Michigan is great, brah. But, yeah, a lot of restaurants are closed right now.

I’m in Bucks County, PA - northern suburb of Philadelphia and routinely see restaurants only able to seat less than half of their tables or close indoor dining altogether due to staffing. We don’t eat out much anyway having two kids but maybe one a month when we do, we’ll go before 5:30 to ensure we can get seated. Every place has signs offering starting pay at over $13/hr for any position like busboy, cook, etc. My 14 y/o always inquires and wants to work 10-12 hours per week but they all tell him the min age is 16.

It's like this most everywhere. There is a shortage of workers everywhere in this country. Before Covid, you had to have been laid off to get unemployment. Now all you have to do is say you are too scared to work due to Covid, and the government hands you a check. It's some messed up shite.

Thanks for the info...guess we'll just go back to Kansas again this summer.

Yep. It's not just Michigan...or Pennsylvania. It's EVERYWHERE. You can't go anywhere without seeing almost every restaurant, grocery store, retail store, etc with "Help Wanted" signs BEGGING for employees.

In our part of Georgia, there are some restaurants that are short-staffed, but for the most part the rest are able to operate at full capacity.
We’ve had one so far that has had an hour and a half wait because of kitchen staff shortages. Otherwise, we’ve been fortunate. The local reputable restaurants haven’t had an issue.
That being said, there are help wanted signs posted just about everywhere.

These restaurants are just shitty at recruiting.

Been in San Diego the last couple days and it’s been pretty nice. Was expecting it to be like this picture but so far it’s been normal. Not as many masks as I was expecting as well.

All the places to go and you choose Michigan…
We’re hitting up San Antonio in a few weeks, I know it’s not the hottest vacation destination but Texas is fully open and that’s why we’re supporting it…

Haven't been out to the lake shore yet this season, but Grand Rapids is generally open. There are a few virtue signaling places that are keeping their dining rooms closed, but for the most part it's open.
Only spots that really closed down for good last year were big chain-type spots with a lot of overhead it seems.
Will be going to Saugatuck next weekend, so I am curious what it will look like.

Michigan in the summer/fall is gorgeous, especially Northern Michigan. I'm born and bred in the south and was apprehensive (to put it mildly) when I was first drug up here during the summer with my then girlfriend, now wife. Was blown away with the weather, scenery and water.

Michigan is a state that needs to find an identity and soon.

You should try it. Temps in the low 80's, nice lakes. Has an old fashioned New England feel to it. Lots of harbor towns with nice water fronts. Beaches are better than i expected.

Maybe do some research next time before booking?

The people in Northern Michigan are very conservative and want to open. The businesses are ready to open fully, but can't because workers are paid more to stay home.

Im staying at my neighbor's cabin. My booking went like this.
Me: "Are you using your cabin this weekend?"
Him: "Nope. Its all yours."
