"This is WRONG!" - Licensed Physician in Utah Unable to Prescribe Hydroxychloroquine Because 'State Has Taken Over Distribution of Drug'

Utah joins Nevada and New York in effectively banning the drug for COVID-19... The drug was found useful in numerous countries.

LINK /

The Utah Dept of Health issued a reasonable order

The Utah Dept of Commerce countermanded that order (with no authority to do so, but it halted prescriptions of the drug)

“I am a licensed physician in Utah. I tried to prescribe hydroxychloroquine but the pharmacist said the state had taken over the distribution of the drug. Even though I’m licensed, I cannot prescribe it. This is WRONG!” Dr. Bill said in a tweet.

At this point I feel Idiocracy is more a documentary than a comedy.

On March 26, the Utah Department of Commerce issued guidance regarding prescriptions for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine. Noting the lack of evidence established either drug as effective in the treatment or prevention of COVID-19, the Department has established guidance to govern the dispensing of both drugs.

No prescription for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine should be dispensed in Utah unless it includes a written diagnosis, confirmed by a documented positive test result. If those conditions are met, pharmacists should only dispense a 7-day supply of the prescribed medication, with no refills permitted unless a new prescription is written.

At this time, the Department’s letter is not publicly available.

In the video linked in the OP, the doctor makes it clear that in Utah, Hydroxychloroquine can NOT be prescribed for COVID-19. It CAN be prescribed for Lupis, but only with lab tests and only for 7 days at a time - extensions require another lab test.

I mean it says if you pop on a test it will be prescribed for 7 days. Maybe this is to prevent hoarding

They want that stimulus money! Hospitals are raking it in with the stimulus! Getting 2.5 months payroll paid for free

Need deaths from coronavirus to stay up

That makes any cure the enemy

Hospitals were going under before this are now prospering

That’s why doctors are talking negatively of Hydroxychloroquine

God bless you. You're the most pathetic character I've seen on here.

I hope it's all just a joke.

Reading comprehension is severely lacking around here sometimes.

Ah, I see that wasn't in the OP.

Which makes me wonder if this is causing issues with doctors prescribing for valid cases and to why this doctor complained about it. I get the rationale for rationing but is the added bureaucracy making it harder doctors to do their job?

Can only be prescribed for Lupis and other diseases that have undergone lengthy double-blind studies.

NOT for COVID-19 - Same language as Nevada and NY (Michigan rescinded their restriction - again, same language)

Watch the video featuring a Utah MD who has brought this issue to the public.

DS owns the American Southwest like no other place it appears. Drugs, human trafficking out the wazoo and law enforcement there compromised even worse than the compromised law enforcement in most places.

No further comment on your ridiculous "reading comprehension" faceplant?

Looks like it is banned as a preventative measure, not treatment.

US Virgin Islands issued a cease and desist. As a clinical pharmacist in hospital, I raised hell with our director. She said it was political. Fortunately she is Chairman of our Board of Pharmacy. They worked with Medical Board to allow use.

Part of the problem is supply. When I first read of HCQ a few weeks ago I asked Purchasing to buy a couple bottles of 100. They cost $1000 each. We could not find generic. Last Friday we found generic for $46 each. Supply seems to be getting better.

We only have 10 cases on St Croix. Nine of those are from contact with visitors, 1 case community spread. We have 1 in ICU that started therapy with HCQ last Fri. I saw him yesterday and spoke with intensivist and nurses taking care of him. He showed improvement yesterday and based on limited data I have seen, I am hoping for more improvement today.

For the strict adherents to double blind placebo control people, I know our numbers are too small to extrapolate with confidence. However these are not normal times. There is enough "anecdotal" evidence to show need for compassionate use.

Also happy Dewine from my old home in Ohio showed common sense in allowing for use.

This action seems well out of bounds for this department. Should be a question for the Utah Department of Health.

There is a serious question of the authority of the Department of Commerce to issue such an order. This department issues professional licenses for MDs, Pharmacists, electrical contractors, plumbing contractors, hairdressers, etc.

I listened to some of the audio of the meeting where this ban was approved. Sounded like a complete clusterfrick.

I'd expect the governor to revoke this order very soon. Gross over-reach by this department.
