The fire is below the waterline. People nearby reported a loud boom.

NYT

quote:

A fire broke out on the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard at the U.S. Naval base in San Diego on Sunday, the Navy said.

The San Diego Fire Department said on Twitter that “several sailors” were being treated for “a variety of injuries.”

An explosion was reported after the fire started. Smoke was billowing from the middle of the ship, though it was unclear where the fire started or what the source of the explosion was.

The Bonhomme Richard, an amphibious assault ship and light aircraft carrier, was docked for scheduled maintenance between deployments, said Krishna Jackson, a Navy spokeswoman.

The ship has light arms but would not normally have large artillery on board while docked, she said.

Trivia - Jim Morrison’s dad, Admiral George Morrison, once captained the Bonny Dick.

He was also over command of the ships in Vietnam involved in the Gulf of Tonkin incident

When these ships are fully stocked with F35s and ospreys, they are considered the deadliest war ship afloat today.

I hope all are well.

2020 will be the first year in a long time that I celebrate it's ending.

What a mess.
Doesn’t at all look like they have control over it.
God bless.

Appears to be spreading.
I wonder what the immediate goal is at this point ... keep it from sinking? Spreading to adjacent vessels? Exploding?

Thank you for your service.

Is there any insight you can provide?
I’m reading it was docked for maintenance, and the fire was possibly started from a welding incident.

This was 13 minutes ago:

From a layman’s perspective, this thing is anything but controlled.
Just saw this on Twitter:
quote:

Bit of concern regarding fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) now that the fire has eased on the back half of the ship. The fireboats had access to the hangar ports, but the fire is now intense in the sections fwd of the hangar. This section will have to be fought inside.
