Article

If you don't know, the South China Sea is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Almost 1/3 of world maritime trade goes through it each year.

But China being China is trying to continue its unlawful expansion over waterway while the rest of the world is dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Other claimants in the area include Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Brunei.

So how big of an arse h0le is China? Earlier this month, they sank a Vietnamese fishing boat. I guess they were threatened by the fishing nets.

In 2014 China deployed an oil platform in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone, leading to a stand-off between Chinese and Vietnamese forces. The Chinese eventually removed the first platform, only later to deploy a second one.

How greedy is China? China claims(through some old maps) that everything inside the "nine-dash-line" belongs to them. This includes all the islands and Shoals, reefs, and of course, Taiwan. Here is the map:

In 2016 international tribunal ruled that China has "no historical rights" based on the "nine-dash line" map. Of course, China rejected the ruling and continue to build on these islands. Also, China has built 2 man made islands, destroying a lot of delicate reefs in the process. But good news(according to rumors) is that their artificial islands is crumbling.

With the news coming out about China running a social media fear campaign here in the US in order to drive to drive our economy into the ground, I don't see any reason why the US can't start a campaign in Taiwan or HK

I feel like we are headed to a hot war with China. I don't have a gauge on timing it just feels like we are headed in that direction.

This is fake news. I bet that carrier is ready for deployment if needed. Those sailors would be back on that ship within 12 hours if needed.

Probably because we don’t officially recognize Taiwan. See, during the Communist Revolution in China, the weak Republic of China government fled to Taiwan when the war was lost. So, they still see themselves as the legitimate government of all of China. Meanwhile, the People’s Republic of China sees themselves as the legitimate government of China and Taiwan as a province in revolt that needs to be incorporated back into the country. So both sides claim the whole. If Taiwan claimed to be independent, they’d have a better claim, but they claim to be China, and China won’t let them get away with that, and barely tolerates Taiwan being independent.

China has recently amped up their action in the South china Sea. The world is closing in and American, Japanese, and Australian companies have already begun leaving them. International sanctions are coming soon(it is inevitable at this point) and their prosperity from trade may have been the one thing keeping them from becoming aggressive. It appears this may very well escalate into war.

Amy one that has ever bought anything made in China could have guessed this was inevitable.

I'm starting to understand the Japanese dislike for China. They were fine when it was just about eggrolls and firecrackers.

0% chance we nuke the crap out of China, but wouldn't it be great if it happened.

Thanks for that historical reference. Can you help me understand why UK gave Hong Kong to CCP?

Not being a smart arse. I just have never understood that move (and too lazy to research).

ETA: Didn't some opium trade have something to do with UK original claim?

Long story short, UK reasoned they couldn't defend the island from a CCP attack, so they bargained.

Cool thanks.

Understand but fear is not helpful in diplomacy. I am sure there is much more, as you stated.
