The U.S. seized four tankers carrying Iranian gasoline bound for Venezuela in an unprecedented move by the Trump administration that carries the potential to destabilize global oil shipments if Iran retaliates.

The tankers were transporting 1.116 million barrels of petroleum, which has now been confiscated after help from “foreign partners,” the Justice Department said in a statement Friday. It is not clear where the ships were at the time of the seizures because they had all turned off their satellite-tracking systems to avoid detection between May and July, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

“These actions represent the government’s largest-ever seizure of fuel shipments from Iran,” according to the DOJ statement, which said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, designated a foreign terrorist organization, was behind the shipment.

President Donald Trump was asked about the tankers at a press conference in Washington. “Iran’s not supposed to be doing that,” he said. “We seized the tankers and we’re moving them” to Houston, he said.

The fact that Venezuela needs oil is incredible

They don’t need oil.

They need gas.

Venezuela’s crude is shitty and requires specialized refineries to handle because of all the sulphur in it.

Iran was likely shipping them light sweet crude which is the preferred crude to use in refining.

On the subject of Venezuela oil production, I remember working with our product line out of Canada when Chavez was in control. We would take our jacked up list price and quote out 4-5x times that to Venezuela. They would take over 2 years to pay, usually only 75% or less, and then the conversion rate was shite. We still would make 90% margin, so it worked out before everything went to shite.

Venezuelan crude is not like ours. From what I understand it is more expensive to refine. They lost a lot of the knowledge in the workforce thanks to Chavez.

quote:

Venezuela's development of its oil reserves has been affected by political unrest in recent years.[when?] In late 2002, nearly half of the workers at the state oil company PDVSA went on strike, after which the company fired 18,000 of them, draining the company of technical knowledge and expertise. Venezuela's crude oil is very heavy by international standards, and as a result much of it must be processed by specialized domestic and international refineries. Venezuela continues to be one of the largest suppliers of oil to the United States, sending about 1.4 million barrels per day (220×103 m3/d) to the U.S. Venezuela is also a major oil refiner and the owner of the Citgo gasoline chain.[5]

Great, the next Democrat president will give Iran 8 American oil tankers and pallets of "i'm sorry" cash.

More likely a destroyer or coast guard cutter pulls up and blasts a "come under escort to port or be fired upon". At least that is how I imagine it goes.

If I’m Iran I may risk it and see if the US sinks an oil tanker and causes an oil spill over sanction-running

I don’t see how the Iranians will pull off the “Dindu Nuffin” defense, nor do I think the sailors on the ship have a death wish nor the companies which own the ship want their property destroyed just to frick the USA.

From the article:

quote:

Presently, Venezuela is unable to produce gasoline because of widespread mechanical failures at its refineries and needed the shipments to alleviate fuel rationing.

Socialism, ladies and gentlemen!

We would just disable the ship if they tried to run it. Those tankers aren't exact nimble or fast. Destroy the rudder/steering, etc., and then board and tow it.

Iran is a shell of it's former self.

SMH. It's like they don't even want to be a threat to the US anymore.
