Not a huge fan of this either, but I do see that chip manufacturing is literally everything. I can see the benefits of this from a national security standpoint because chips are just as important as weaponry at this point.
Not as okay with things like this when I can't see a national security angle.

If that option was on the table, you would be right. Unfortunately, in the real world, the government is giving away money.

If you want the US to maintain its technological advantage, money has to be spent. It makes sense to make a profit on that money. If companies don't want to pay back the money with interest, then they shouldn't take it to begin with.

I mean...I'm sure Intel would have just as readily sold a stake to China.

Is it a giod idea? Here's a very simple test:
Imagine if Biden did this...now give your answer.

They literally failed and we stepped in. It was a pretty terrible idea too.
Now we’re making an investment in a company that has literally been one of the worst investments of the last 25 years, but isn’t failing. It’s unprecedented.

Even if I were to budge on the national security angle - which is hard to do given the AMD/NVDA 15% deal - we backed arguably the worst foundry company in the world.
The cherry on top is Trump wanting their CEO fired 3 weeks ago.

Trump picking winners and losers is NOT good for the country. this is a slippery slope that were just now running down. MP first, now INTEL.
Wait til Dems get in power, then all our tax dollars will be buying companies of their choosing. Such a fricking disaster. And sure Trump will say its about national security, but we all know he is just tipping the scales to protect American companies, however this will be abused by future administrations if there is no push back or lawsuits stopping these purchases

Hell yeah let’s get some American state-owned enterprises going.

It seems like a good deal on the surface. 5.7B of the US's stake in this deal is grant funding that hasn't been paid yet. So instead of simply giving money away the US is getting something in exchange.
This will also help advance a key part of Trump's agenda, which is domestic chip development. I can see where he's coming from with this.

In this case, the US taxpayer appears to be the winner. We're gaining a stake in Intel for money that was already granted to Intel. I'm honestly not sure why Intel would agree to that, but that's what we have going on here.

your shortsightedness is a also weakness. This is just the beginning. Extrapolate this a decade. the US taxes the frick out of its citizens so it can invest in US companies, taking money out of taxpayers pockets and putting it into corporate owners

Well no, that's not what this is. Intel was already granted this money. There is no scenario where Intel doesn't get this money.
This is so unlike what you described that it isn't even on the same planet. This is closer to clawing back whatever we can get from money already dedicated to a purpose.

You should look up analogies.
Your analogy compared it to the confiscation and prohibition to own AR15s. That’s not a direct correlation to defense contractors who are developing made for government contract products that no consumer could afford.
There also isn’t a single nation that doesn’t regulate or partner with defense contractors.
Are you arguing that General Dynamics should be allowed to build Abrams tanks and export to whoever they want?
Many platforms are leveraging DARPA patents licensed to private companies to begin with so they didn’t even shoulder all the R&D costs and wouldn’t have ever had the tech without federal support.

Again, this is money that was going to Intel either way. The Biden admin awarded this money to Intel. They were going to get it anyway.
Even if the government later sells its stake at a loss, ANY money recieved would more of a gain than would have been possible without this deal.
