If they were invading Russia it would be a problem, but they aren't. Even Russia has limits on acceptable casualties (see Afghanistan). At this point most estimate that Russia has lost in less than 1.6 years over 3x the amount they lost in Afghanistan over 10 years.

While Russia has great media control and has been careful to conscript mostly from the outer regions, eventually people start noticing groups of men are missing.

How long before they get to that point and what state will the war be in nobody knows, but it's been pretty clear for the last 6 months that Russia had struggled significantly more than Ukraine to conduct offensive operations. You don't win wars by sitting in your foxhole and getting picked off by drones.

They’re reservists and volunteers. They can’t send conscripts to Ukraine per the constitution. The volunteers do come disproportionately from the republics, but that is probably cultural, these are more traditional and violent places, and it’s to some degree an economic issue. These are very poor places.

Defense is the stronger form of warfare. It’s operationally advantageous to let the Ukrainians attack. They’ll suffer heavier casualties attacking than they would defending, it’s much more expensive for them. The Russians will have to attack eventually but what they’re doing is logical.
