This is rather odd. It would seem that 230 pissed off people could cause some serious damage to the company while waiting to be fired.
I'm willing to bet that in the end, that number won't be 230.. This cool off time will allow management to cull the herd of the employees that they desire to be shown the door or at least fire and rehire the ones they want to keep.

Um. You should probably at least for accuracy rename your OP.
They were fired for going on strike when their union agreed to a "no strike" clause.
Um, strikes are usually a pass for not working...they went on strike and walked off their jobs....so I guess the firing was both, for striking against the contract and for not being at work during that time.

Unions are like the telegraph. They were once useful but now unnecessary. Should we have to continue to use them even though they have outlived their purpose?
That's an absurd comparison. Unions aren't a simple invention or inanimate object that makes life more convenient, they're a social/cultural institution like laws, constitutions, free press, courts, elections, etc. Humans already have plenty of experience living in societies without any of these institutions, and concluded we are better off with them, despite their imperfections. Saying that unions should be abolished because some union leaders behave unethically is like saying that Congress should be abolished because some Congressmen are on the take or that courts should be abolished because some judges are crooked.

TD.com poli board is anti worker yet again? Shocking news!

I am also surprised that UPS has come out and stated that they would be "fired". When I was in the union 20 years ago that was a huge no no. If a supervisor ever threatened to "fire" you, you had his arse dead to rights.

That about sums them up.

A liberal who doesn't like to live up to inconvenient contracts. SHOCKING!!!

That's a straw man if there ever was one. Believing in the concept of labor unions doesn't mean agreeing with everything that unions do, including these UPS workers.

I think it's shitty they fired these people for voicing their opinion. Obviously they have every legal right to do it. I don't see what's so hard about holding both of those views.

Actually they are.

That do nothing more than serve the masters at the top who, in turn, manipulate their workers into believing that everyone is out to get them. It's a culture of fear, lies and extortion.

I'm sure many of the Dems in congress and in the courts are loyal to their union overlords as well.

Unions can help in certain situations:
A mid-sized city has (basically) 1 hospital. It is owned by the city. There is a token "competitor" but the city hospital services 98% of the city.
The city hospital has been driving down wages of h.c. professionals for years. It has also been increasing work load...because it can. In a true free market, another hospital could open and compete BUT the city controls zoning so....there isn't going to be any real competition. H.C. workers are screwed.
In this case, IMO unions are appropriate. They can't just go work somewhere else.

I didn't get that from his post.
What I find odd is the pure hatred for unions from a lot of posters on the board who are likely in no way affected by unions. It comes off as ideological indoctrination.
So UPS is union and FedEx isn't?
Really?
I couldn't care less.

Used to be, not showing up to work on purpose could get your fired with a quickness.
