Yea that's a good point. There's been a spike in cases in DFW thanks to a few outbreaks at retirement homes and the assisted living center near Denton. Does any other metropolitan area use mass transit like New York? I remember BART in San Fran was popular along with other mass transit.

Chicago and DC probably. Other than that, I don't think so.

Worldmeter updated their stats from yesterday, deaths are at 912 now.

I guess we know where the deaths from Sunday ended up

The one stat that I am going to pay attention to today is the rate of infection compared to the last 7 days. If it it doesn't go past 13.99% then we know the rate of infection slowed in our country last week.

I suspect yesterday's growth was just a matter of a lot of backlog tests coming in at the same time, not the true reflection of rate of infections.

If we approach 15% today though then it means that rate of infections is growing.

NOTE: Worldometer, updated the death total for 3/31, raising it up to 912 for the day. These are probably the missing deaths from Sunday.

NYC, Chicago and DC are, by far, the densest mass transit systems.

Everyplace has city buses, though, so cities will always be susceptible via that vector.

Recall the last time you were on a city bus you considered "clean", much less sanitized. The advantage of a train is that they are, by and large, designed to be cleaned/sanitized periodically. Buses? Not so much.

Plus, cabs, ubers, etc. in big cities can be disgusting AF.

Why was Tuesday such an anomaly? Both at the national and LA level. LA reported less tests than Monday but the positive % went from 7 to 25%. Something seems weird

Having watched all these numbers closely for a while now, I believe it has to do with reporting inconsistency across the country.

Hospitals and Labs report to state health departments who report to the federal level. There are bound to be issues with delayed or incorrect numbers getting reported up.

Over time it should all balance out.

My advice is to look at the big picture trends and not pay as much attention to individual days numbers.

Just a hunch... but my guess is tests come in all week and the labs backlog gets really high throughout the week. On the weekend, less testing comes in, they clear out the backlog. It all gets reported to the state on Monday, who publishes it on Tuesday.

Theres something else that I can add to some minor inaccuracies to this data. My boss and I live in a state, close to the border of another. We work in the other state. He went down with the wuhan, the county where we work only had 7 cases. We reported his positive from where we work. Where we live likely also counted him. No clue if there is reconciliation between states, not likely.

LA wasn’t a problem on number of tests. They reported more tests Monday than they did Tuesday. The percentage of positives skyrocketed. Now that’s not necessarily the case on national level

Solid point. Any places in the country with similar (or more) hospital beds per capita should be feeling a little better as long as the healthcare system in NY stays under control.

NYC update this morning...

Hospitalizations at Elmhurst is slowing.

Only 43 deaths since yesterday afternoon's update. Only 3,144 new cases.

Things are slowing down in NYC. Death rate is slow on a per day basis. Same thing with new cases. Obviously some up and down from day to day, but the trend on both show things are getting better.

There will still be lots of death coming in NYC from COVID in the coming weeks though.

The weekend has consistently caused 'accordion effect' reporting for the early part of the following week.

Numbers going up pretty quickly today. I'm not convinced that yesterday wasn't catchup to Sunday's abnormally low numbers, so the finals for today will be interesting to see.

We have already crossed 200K cases today.

I find it funny that someone seems to be camped out downvoting every post in this thread that discusses the numbers.
