Ukraine and the EU seem really confused about the role of a mediator in a dispute.

Trump talks to one side to get a demand. Takes the demand to the other side to see what they agree on and what they do not agree on to work out a negotiated deal.
The side with the most leverage has the most power and the side with the least has to give up more. Here Ukraine is losing the war and has the least leverage.
It’s not difficult to understand

They (US and EU) have been playing this role (mediator) while simultaneously being the agitator the entire time.

It’s not a perfect analogy, but Trump’s role has been similar to what a mediator does. Any lawyer who practices civil litigation knows exactly what is going on. Unfortunately most people and the media just don’t understand.

True, but in this case Zelensky has a great motive to refuse any compromise. Elections in Ukraine cannot happen during war. So, he will stay in power forever as long as there is no peace agreement. His funding from the West is also flowing as long as the war is going on. When he's 65 he may concede territory and retire with all the money he's acquired illegally.

Germany, France, and the UK are just mad that they have zero influence anymore. I honestly don’t know how far back in history you have to go for none of those countries to be a major player on the global stage.
But that’s the reality now and it’s hilarious to watch. The fact that the US has to mediate a war on their own continent is emasculating.

This is the most salient point, yet many seem to miss it.
