Fairly predictable, though. Who didn't see "socialism ain't so bad" coming?

One guy said FDR did it so why can't Trump?

Trump is right here, only stupid people think tariffs would be the reason car prices would go up. Manufacturers want to raise prices every year no matter what because of inflation and greed
Definately raising COGS, eliminating lower cost alternatives, are certainly the path to lower prices!

You retards are insane. New car prices are up 100% in 25 years and you object to a president suggesting enough is enough.
Exactly! We need some good ol'fashioned price controls. They worked so good in Venezuela! Just like Billy D used to say... Cult45 works every time!

You complained because tariffs were going to increase prices.

I didn't complain, I just stated facts. I've repeatedly said there are good uses for them, I just don't pretend they don't come with a cost.

Can't say I'm surprised.

Peter Navarro was on Fox this morning explaining how tariffs were a huge success when Jimmy Carter used them against the Japanese in the 70s. Jimmy fricking Carter!

And there will be. I posted this a few days ago:

quote:

Here's a massive 38 page study (published March 24th) signed off on by nearly 30 trade organizations. This is specifically about what happens with the $1.5 million dollar fee the Chinese ships will pay per port. It goes into great detail as I'm sure you can imagine. It isn't a rosy picture. Trade deficits increase, employment drops, all sorts of nightmarish stuff. Trump wants this fee to get domestic ship building back on track which is a noble endeavor. How much pain are we willing to absorb to make that happen? Here are a couple highlights:

Exports would decline by up to $21.4 billion, worsening the U.S. trade deficit. Industries that rely on cost-effective shipping, including manufacturing, retail and agriculture, would experience higher costs and lose the ability to remain competitive.

USTR’s proposed remedies would increase shipping costs by 8% to 14%, leading to higher prices for imported goods, according to the new study.

More than 60% of U.S. imports rely on maritime shipping, meaning increased costs would affect nearly all industries.

Supply chain delays would worsen, impacting retailers, manufacturers and distributors.

Port traffic could decline by up to 11%, as shipping companies reroute through Canada or Mexico to avoid fees. As a result, U.S. warehousing and trucking jobs would be lost due to reduced port activity and the price of everyday goods would rise due to supply chain disruptions.

This isn't hard. You talk about econ 101. You have used that line in multiples threads in talking about tariffs.
Simple econ 101 question for you... why would you expect (or even want) a nation with the strongest currency on the planet to have "balanced" trade, and no trade deficit? Part II why would you expect that nation to be a net exporter?

Fearmongering. Got it.

That is correct.

Trump is attempting to use fear mongering tactics to intimidate auto makers.

You are on it!

This is one of the reasons why populism sucks. Do we really want top-down pricing just to prop up a policy decision?

It is funny to watch the companies bragging about being American made raise their prices because the competition has to raise theirs.

Some of that blame is deserved. If they’re raising prices simply because they can, then all the lip service they previously paid to being “American made” was just marketing. Right?

Yes, this entirely. Nothing slimier than a car salesman.

Prices on all cars/trucks will go up to varying degrees due to the foreign content in every vehicle sold here.

Even Tesla, 100% assembled in the US, has foreign made parts and Musk has said the tariffs will impact them.

The tariffs are not only on cars depending on where they are assembled. The parts are also tariffs.

Example-A BMW X5 is assembled in SC so no tariff, right? Nope. At a minimum it's engine and transmission is made in Germany, so those parts will be tariffed per the rules out currently.

Can't wait for all the people to start screaming the manufacturers are being greedy because the price went up on their American made car that has 40% of it's parts made outside the US.

You’re being a bit naive. We got a letter from a manufacturer that said “we’re raising prices in anticipation of increased demand for American-made goods.” This was accompanied by messaging that said “our competition is going to have to increase prices, so we are going to increase prices, too.”

Yeah the problem with not doing sales through dealerships is the manufacturer wouldn’t produce as many vehicles. They sell the vehicles to the dealer and therefore produce as many as possible.

As a consumer you pay the set price if it was direct. The price would be marked up by the manufacturer for profit.

Some dealerships do play stupid games that are painful but the model has lasted this long for a reason
