The US isn't going to do this. This idea of the US "paying for NATO" is a misnomer. We don't give any money to any organization called "NATO." The money is monies used in each respective nation's own national defense. And there is zero chance the US stops funding its own self defense.

What they can do, however, should and probably WILL do, is pull our troops out of all European bases. They won't like that at all, because whether they want to admit it or not, having US troops stationed on their soil keeps them safe.
All true. But people having strong opinions on things they don’t even understand at a basic level is pretty much standard operating procedure around here.

Only partly true.

There is a direct common fund that we contribute roughly 500-700 million per year to. This is outside of our own defense budget. That used to be higher until Trump negotiated the percentage from 22% down to 16% in 2019.

We also fund 40% of the costs for an AWACS program under NATO.

Why does their style of governance and/or economic policy matter to you? If that’s what the people want, more power to them. Europeans are generally happier with their government and life in general than Americans. They’re healthier and live longer as well. That “socialism” seems to be working quite well for them.

No chance, and no one should want it. Nothing gets better, easier, or less expensive if we leave NATO.

Hes done with everyone not paying their share. His talking about this is the leverage he needs to get them to do right. He'll get congress to agree to vote at a later time should other countries not live up to obligation

Their quasi-socialist leaders are "elected" the same way most of our career politicians are... in that they are compliant puppets installed by controlling interests.

Has the US ever had to come to the aid of another NATO country? I know they've assisted us before.

Either way, I'm sure Europe can survive 3 more years.

Why would we stop funding our own military? That is, after all, what people refer to as "NATO funding"--the amount that each member spends on its own military.

There are some post you just have to ignore. It'll make your head hurt.

Right. But this is nothing. This is less than .1% of our GDP. I mean, I guess he could stop giving to the common fund, but that amount wouldn't even cause the other NATO countries to bat an eye.

Until he's sued and forced to resume payment by the courts.

It needs to happen just to show Europe how fricked they are without our military to protect them.

Right. It's not going to happen. He can't just pull us out of NATO. But he can bring our troops home from European bases. Which, imo, would be just as good. And he can also say that he won't send any troops to their defense should Article 5 be evoked.
