Socialism is attractive to many, for this reason. Sadly they believe it too.

I can appreciate your purist approach to capitalism, i would prefer that approach.

But when other countries subsidize their products on the open market, our farmers can not compete. They are cheaters, and it can devistate our industries.

Victor Davis Hansen often talks about the california raisin industry as an example. His main competitors were getting a subsidy per ton on raisins, while california raisin farmers were not. They were told that this "made them stronger" because they had to compete in an unfair environment. All it did was force them out of business.

This is just one example, and ideally we would use tariffs to punish those countries using unfair subsidies. But barring that, subsidies to our own farmers to keep them in business seems reasonable.

There are plenty of crops that aren't grown here for economic reasons. Why are raisins special?

Here's your problem, we also subsidize select industry, but not others. We rig the game for select big corporations.

The automakers were given billions for example to retool their factories, given stimulus to sell cars, and look whats happened. We're buying stock in corporations, thats socialism.

Protecting industry here has high cost, its not just China doing it.

Paying farmers directly. Subsidizing corn for ethanol, converting farmland to wind farms, tariffs..

n short, inputs are getting pricier and revenues have shrunk.

Probably the largest issue, FDA policies have helped Big Corp over smaller farms and this consolidated farmland.

The American agricultural landscape has transformed dramatically over the past few decades. Once dominated by small, family-owned farms, the industry is now heavily influenced by large corporations.

The automakers ...

We are not talking about corporatism here.

We are talking about helping out family farmers that are the backbone of our ag industry.

And the automakers... with all due respect (or lack thereof): frick the automakers.

I'm already educated enough to know that not all crops are economically feasible to grow here. You aren't, perhaps?

What crop is feasible to grow when some countries are subsidizing their farmers to grow it?

That might make a crop not feasible to grow anywhere.

You can grasp the concept. Think about it more carefully.
