I know President Xi of China very well. He is a great leader who very much has the respect of his people. He is also a good man in a “tough business.” I have ZERO doubt that if President Xi wants to quickly and humanely solve the Hong Kong problem, he can do it. Personal meeting?

This was a smart move by Trump. He stayed focused on China and did not take questions which prevented the media from changing the subject to the riots.

Dude. That’s nauseatingly Maoist of you. I mean I get that you are all eaten up with hate but how can you be so flippant and dismissive about Chinese oppression? Have you not listened to the tearful pleadings of the people of Hong Kong? Do you not understand that 2 million Uyghurs have been disappeared to re-education camps against their will? Shameful. Like cheerleading for Nazi Germany in 1939.

Trump was best friends with Xi when he started making moves toward this. He didn't soundly side with Hong Kong in those protests and Xi took that as a green light.
You have no idea what was being said through back channels.

China has been planning these moves for 5 decades. They were always going to move on Hong Kong well before 2047, and they are going to move on Taiwan sooner than later as well.
The Chinese Communist Party does not play short term reactionary politics. Everything they do has been schemed for a long time.
