And why can’t we judge the pAndEMiC based on deaths by reported cases? Doesn’t that give an accurate descriptor for mortality rate?

Yes. Rush was going on about this on his program today. Death rate as a percentage of population is dumb. The focus should be the death rate as a percentage of the cases. That's a more accurate reflection, but doesn't fit the media narrative/fear porn.
ETA: Never paid much attention to Jonathan Swan. That's one smug motherfricker.

If country A has 1,000 cases with a 6% mortality rate, then they have 60 dead. If country B has 1M cases with a 4% mortality rate, then they have 40,000 dead. Who did a better job?

Country B because Country B counts dying WITH Covid as dying FROM Covid and Country A doesn't count dying WITH cases.
