It's not about losing states or even counties....it's about the margins. If Trump wins a county with 55% in 2020 but won with 60% in 2016 thay is a 5 pt swing to the Democrat. In some cases key conties were just barely flipped like Kent in Michigan. It was about not losing indivodual counties by as much. Obama did this in 2008 and 2012. Is it any surprise that Biden did not use the same strategy.
Trump's people did not pay attention to the ground game and Trump thought people hated Biden like they hated Hillary. They did not. I know Republicans that grew tired of Trump and his boobish ways. I know Republican campaign types who tell me that they had zero help from his campaign in terms of strategy and they are still pissed about it.

Turnout for President was higher across the board. So Trump gets higher turnout as does Biden.
Trump was good retail, but strategically not as good. He pissed off a lot of Republican establishment types....types you NEED in order to do the little things necessary. Campaigns like 2020 are won on the margins. On the margins, Democrats are superior in organization and overall effectiveness.

But, that is not where they won. They always have the cities. They won by peeling of voters in the suburbs and exurbs. Think point spreads. My team can win the game, but if the losing team covers the point spread, your bet on the losing team puts you in the money. That's what the Democrats did and have been doing since Obama especially in the suburbs. Hillary did not do a good job of it. So Trump wins county X with 55% of the vote. But if the betting odds had him winning with 60%....it's a Democrat win.
