H1bs started in 1991, if cap was given out every year plus some, you're talking less thna 3 million over 33 years.
This is not the hill to die on, that number probably just walked across the border last year undocumented, and being non contributory.

The H1B thing is so important to tech industry elites because they're realizing that the AI boom is a load of shite and there is no magic silver bullet coming to lower their payroll. Just like self-driving car hype from a decade ago, they are realizing that LLMs generating quality code based upon requirements is not immediately over the horizon (next decade). So they want Americans to just accept that we need to import foreigners to do this work on the cheap and not risk changing jobs because their entire visa depends on their current employer.
People need to wisen up to what these elites will do to us. They have us sell our industrial capacity off to global free trade in the 1980s and 1990s but told us our sons and daughters would all work in the knowledge industry. Then we tell a whole generation to go get STEM degrees and they want to pull the rug out from under our kids by importing talent they don't need instead of hiring an American for a decent wage and freedom of movement.
I'll finish my career out in software engineering if for no other reason than you'll need somebody with my skills and experience to supervise the Indians and LLMs work on what I architected. However, I'd probably just worked in some of the auto parts industry in my hometown if it didn't dry up in the 1990s and early 2000s. Software was a way to the middle class or better for me and I put in the work to get there.
A lot of what I think the tech captains of industry want smells like another NAFTA where we screw a generation of people because how we mentored their training path will end up being gone by the time they enter the workforce in a few decades.

Thoughtful reply. Thank you.
I was born in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1972, and watched GM tear down factories over the course of the past 20-30 years that were fixtures of the landscape for decades.
I know what you’re talking about.

I think I'll wait until we hear directly from Trump on this.
I don't trust these secondhand scoop quotes.
Biden had just changed the rules regarding these visas and I am not aware of what those were and what prompted all this drama to begin with.
I think Vivek is focused on changing the “culture” as far as “education” is concerned. I think our education system needs to be completely transformed, just like our government. I think that would go a long way to safeguarding future generations from being victims of the H1-B visa program.
But I see things coming, which will make this whole H1-B visa issue nonexistent in the future.
Trump knows the American people are exceptional. He knows they can compete with anyone.
But the American worker has been purposely screwed for generations as the puppet masters moved our manufacturing overseas and raised minimum wages to make American workers more expensive to hire. At the same time they were driving up costs on American companies by taxing and regulating them to death. While also allowing foreign companies to flood our markets with their cheap goods and foreign workers to flood over our borders illegally, in order to replace American workers.
Trump is going to literally end all of that.
Trump is going to tariff all the countries that are putting tariffs on our companies to level the playing field.
Trump is going to massively cut federal taxes and I believe he will completely eliminate the federal income tax and fund a much smaller government with tariffs only.
No income taxes would increase the amount of money in the American people’s pockets WITHOUT FORCING American companies to raise their wages. This makes them more competitive and increases the opportunities for the hiring of American workers.
Trump is going to massively cut federal regulations, which will cut costs for American companies and make them far more competitive globally.
Then there’s inflation and the global debt system, which is at the center of all of our problems.
Trump is going to bankrupt the global central bank debt system by bankrupting the FED. The FED is sitting on a lot of bad debt while the assets are sitting in the Treasury.
The day is coming when the entire central bank system will no longer exist and it’s going to happen a lot sooner than people expect.
Trump is also going to restore the gold standard which will end inflation.
The fiat Federal Reserve Note that has been losing value every day as they print and spend, will no longer exist.
Our money will once again become honest and backed by gold/silver.
Now imagine the future.
No inflation. Honest money that has a lot more purchasing power.
More money in peoples pockets.
A financial system that is open and honest because it’s on a decentralized blockchain rather than controlled by a cabal of central banks.
And a federal government that is no longer taxing and regulating American companies to death, but instead, is helping them to compete globally.
American companies and American workers being “allowed” for the first time to actually compete on a level playing field.
I don’t think we’re actually thinking big enough.
I think Trump’s plans are much bigger than we can imagine and we are going to witness an expanding economy that we never dreamed of.
I think this H1-B visa program is a narrative deployment to put a spotlight on this issue in order to make it easier for Trump to make the necessary changes that are coming.
Just my opinion.

Goodness. Just accept the fact that 2024 Trump isn’t 2016 Trump. Take the loss. Attempting to justify this “evolution” is simply stupid. It is what it is. Trump was given 10s of millions this election cycle by the tech sector, and they expect returns. At this point, Trump is just another politician, the antithesis of what we all thought he was.
In the end, we will get our tax cuts extended, deport a few criminals, the economy will improve and some more of the wall might be built. That’s about all we will get. There will be no major spending cuts. There might be some more criminal justice reforms. But there will not be any of the “nothing can stop what is coming” bullcrap that was sold to us.

But no I unequivocally and strongly disagree with Trump, Elon and Vivek on this topic and would bet that 60-70% of his voting base does as well.
I reckon to believe that a lot of liberal STEM industry employees probably agree with the 60-70% of his voting base even if it makes them feel uncomfortable.
I have had many fine visa holding coworkers but I've struggled to believe that these hires were due to the inability to source the talent domestically. Rather, I think the leadership were trying to find a price point and retention stability that worked for them.
Most H1Bs are not some 1-of-1 expert in their field. They can find a javascript frontend developer here in the U.S. of A., they just don't want to deal with them leaving in 18-24 months for a better deal from another tech shop.

Goodness indeed. If you are under the impression that I have ever argued that Trump was going to “save” the last remnants of dying Republic, you certainly have me mixed up with another poster.
My primary argument on this forum is that some level of populist pushback is the very best outcome we can hope for in our wholly corrupted political environment. With that said, Trump’s latest pronouncement on H-1B visas in no way suggests that Trump is abandoning his base or that the MAGA coalition is fracturing.

God bless their little hearts if they do. I can only imagine the absolute mess of US business school grads who do not understand technology well enough trying to give concise requirements to foreigners who speak english as a second language.
