Let's see----the biggest financial supporters of ISIS are the Sunni Arab states like Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar.

The war in Yemen is about Iran---not a mention of ISIS in the entire article.

Did he say he was going to wage war on behalf of Sunni Arabs while he was running?

We know HRC was going to because she took $25 million from the Saudis. Are they paying Trump too or is he simply doing it to keep the military industrial complex and McCain happy???

Interventionist foreign policy is the opposite of MAGA.

On the bright side, this should put to rest any suspicion that he's a puppet of Russia. Putin wants everyone out of the way so he can prop up Assad.

Can you Trumpkins explain how fighting Iran backed bad guys in Yemen is fighting ISIS????

I think you will find that Iran has been hammering ISIS more than any other country.

Ironic isn't it?

I wholeheartedly disagree with his continuation of the Bush/Obama Mid East policy.

What about Al Quaeda, why he is seeing a huge increase in membership over the last several months?

We want to defeat ISIS but that will help strengthen Assad, but we don't want that either, so we need to defeat ISIS and the Iranians and the Russians and Assad and the non-moderate rebels. Sounds easy to me

To be fair, Yemen is a jihadi Disneyworld.

You really believe this is going to happen? I bet you believed o-care would be repealed by now and Mexico would be paying for a wall, too.

How the hell else is he supposed to win it? Do you think you can actually just drone Isis out of existence? You can't win a war if you don't take territory away from the enemy. They must either be killed defending the territory they hold or driven from it in defeat.

ISIS will lose most of its infrastructure, territorial holdings, and semblance as a "state" before the year is out.

And that's largely being accomplished by, with, and through regional partners. If this becomes or is even portrayed as another US mission to shape the middle east, it'll never be over. We have to continue to enable Arab and Muslim partners in the region and encourage them to not let the Iraqi, Iranian, and Syrian regimes turn this into a sectarian (Shia vs Sunni) victory. That would be almost as bad as it being an American over Muslim victory.

How is expanding the war in Yemen anything but a Shia vs Sunni sectarian conflict?

I was talking about strategic communication. Obviously everything in the Middle East is at least somewhat driven by religious and ethnic sectarianism. We need to make sure that the people we're working with minimize the degree to which that's emphasized when they win.

And we aren't expanding shite into Yemen. It's already going on.

Adding US forces and assets on a larger basis is certainly expansion of war.

Depends upon the scale. Limited, targeted support to the Arab coalition fighting in Yemen can help. But the type and scale of that support, the execution of it, and the messaging will be critical. Again, we can not let this ever evolve/devolve into another US-led effort. And we have to work with our partners to make sure they don't see it as sectarian conquests (Sunni in Yemen, Shia in Iraq and Syria).

It's a mess. It's the most complicated foreign policy messes we've been in since Vietnam. Maybe even moreso.
